Chapter 8
Seeing I’d lost my enthusiasm, she didn’t get annoyed. “Then let’s go try some of the attractions.”
Xiao Chen wanted to take me to do a deck parachute jump. I remembered the underwear wrapped up under my trench coat and could only make excuses to refuse.
Thinking I wouldn’t be able to hide it from her forever, I gritted my teeth and admitted I didn’t actually live on this floor.
I told her about me and Xiao Wang. As expected, Xiao Chen got mad.
“I had my eye on him too. I hadn’t even made a move yet and you jumped the line.”
I opened my trench coat. “May the best woman win. He’s single. You can go knock on his door all you want.”
“He’s single, but you aren’t.” Xiao Chen’s tone was cutting and sarcastic.
I didn’t want to lose Xiao Chen as a friend.
She was so much like a real bestie, and I still needed her help to hide things from Xu Jiacheng for the next few days.
So I transferred her a big red packet and smiled apologetically. “Come on, sis, don’t be mad. How was I supposed to know you were into him too?”
Once she’d pocketed the money, Xiao Chen cooled off. After all, Xiao Wang wasn’t her boyfriend.
She pinched my arm playfully. “You, seriously. So restless.”
Then something seemed to click for her. “Oh! This morning you told me your boyfriend can’t satisfy you, so that’s why you-”
I didn’t bother explaining, just asked her not to tell Guo Bin.
Xiao Wang might be great, but maybe he was a total player, and I was just his “cruise wife.”
I couldn’t miss out on the eagle and let the meat in my hand fly away-that “meat” being my physical-boyfriend Guo Bin.
Of course, all Xiao Chen knew was that I wanted to keep this from Guo Bin. She had no idea the person I really needed her help to hide from was Xu Jiacheng.
Once everything was laid out, I felt much more relaxed and went with Xiao Chen to the cruise ship’s bar for a drink.
At the bar, we got to chatting with one of the cruise staff.
I asked him about the “ice cream on the cruise” rumor and finally got an answer.
Turns out, “they hand out ice cream on the cruise when someone dies” wasn’t baseless gossip.
It usually happens on long-distance cruises with a lot of elderly passengers.
Many retirees splurge their pension on a once-in-a-lifetime luxury cruise that crosses several countries.
These long luxury cruises last at least a month, sometimes several, and can carry thousands or even tens of thousands of people.
Given that length of time and number of passengers-most of them seniors-a few people dying along the way is completely normal.
By the end of a trip, if fewer than ten people have died, it’s considered acceptable.
But if the number exceeds expectations, there aren’t enough refrigerated compartments to store the bodies.
Once a cruise ship is far from port, they have to wait until they dock to move the corpses ashore.
So they can only use the food storage freezers instead.
