Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Liang Jingnian trended on social media after all, and it was because of my son.
Xiyue Group, whose PR department was usually incredibly efficient, didn’t release a single statement. It was as if they had been ordered to stay put and do nothing.
They waited so long that the Lin Group finally lost their patience and took the initiative to issue a statement of their own.
Lin Wan went even further, posting a photo of herself with Liang Jingnian on social media and publicly confirming that she was his fiancée.
She took the high road, writing: “We’re all adults here. He’s just an ex; I don’t mind.”
“But the child? That’s pure fabrication.”
“I’d like to ask Miss He-what kind of child takes two years to gestate?”
Liang Jingnian and I had been separated for five years.
My son was three years old.
On the surface, there was clearly no connection between the two.
Consequently, a mob of people swarmed my profile to call me a “slut,” accusing me of abandoning my boyfriend only to get knocked up by someone else immediately after.
Some netizens even pointed fingers at my son, calling him a bastard.
I cursed under my breath.
If I had a choice, I actually wished the child wasn’t Liang Jingnian’s. I never wanted to have anything to do with that man again for the rest of my life.
I turned around to find my son standing outside the door, holding a glass of milk.
His pale little face was expressionless, but his eyes were dark and bright. He seemed quite displeased that I had used foul language.
“Mommy-”
His face was set, looking solemn and serious. Seeing that he was about to start lecturing me, I quickly took the milk from his hands and swallowed a handful of pills.
“Thanks, baby.”
“Goodnight. Mommy’s tired.”
I scrambled under the covers and closed my eyes, feigning sleep.
My son watched me for a few seconds, pursing his lips. He was still young, after all, and couldn’t hide his thoughts. He stood by my bed for a long time before finally speaking.
“Mommy.”
“Hmm?”
“Is that man online my daddy?”
He had seen the side-by-side comparison photo too. Their features were almost identical, right down to that cold, distant expression they both wore.
I sat up and ruffled his fluffy hair, adopting the tone of a gentle, guiding mother. “He Chen.”
“You’re a little man now.”
“I’m going to tell you some tragic news, and you have to be brave, okay?”
He nodded, his eyes full of earnestness.
“That’s not your dad,” I whispered. “Your dad turned into a dog and ran away to be a stray.”
My son’s eyes widened visibly.
“Alright, baby, go process that on your own.”
“It’s late. Mommy has to work tomorrow.”
He leaned over the duvet and hugged my neck tightly, his little body warm against mine.
“Mommy, don’t be sad.”
“I’ll always stay with you. I won’t run away.”
“Goodnight, Mommy.”
He kissed my cheek.
Such a warm little boy. I often marveled at my own courage for choosing to give birth to him when everyone else was against it. Watching him grow up through all the stumbles and falls, I had never once regretted it.
