Chapter 9
In the evening, Lin Yuezhou came home right on time as usual.
Perhaps because he knew tonight was the last day of the deadline I had mentioned, he was in an exceptionally good mood. He hugged me from behind and said gently, “Xiao Li, let’s go to the restaurant where we had our first date tonight. Let’s make up for our seventh anniversary, okay?”
When we arrived at the restaurant, it was still the same spot as back then.
The warm yellow light shone on his face, softening his sharp features.
For a moment, it felt as if he had turned back into that youthful boy.
Back then, he watched me cut my steak and chuckled softly:
“Xiao Li, why are you still so cute?”
After saying that, he took the knife and fork from my hands, skillfully cut a piece of steak, and fed it to me.
I had always known that Lin Yuezhou was very smart. After leaving his original family, he used his expertise to start his own business while still in college. After graduating, he founded his own company, achieved financial freedom, and never again suffered the hardship of not knowing where his next meal would come from.
He was also very romantic. Somehow, he produced a bouquet of red roses and placed them on the table:
“Roses for the beauty, to celebrate our first date.”
When I came back to my senses, there was a bouquet of red roses on the table, just like back then, and the same set meal was served.
“Enjoy your meal.”
Music began to play, the lights dimmed, and the atmosphere was just right.
Suddenly, Lin Yuezhou’s phone rang.
Without looking, I already knew it was Song Jiaojiao.
His expression turned a bit flustered, and he pressed decline.
But the call came through again, persistent.
I tactfully stood up, “I’m going to the restroom.”
Lin Yuezhou seemed relieved and nodded stiffly:
“Okay.”
When I returned, I heard Song Jiaojiao’s tearful voice:
“Azhou, why haven’t you talked to me these past few days? You clearly still care about me.”
“Ah… Don’t touch me! Go away.”
Lin Yuezhou’s voice tightened, and he hurriedly asked, “Jiaojiao, where are you? What’s wrong?”
“I’m drinking at a bar… There’s a man who’s been harassing me. I’m so scared, really so scared.”
“Azhou, please come pick me up.”
Lin Yuezhou grabbed his car keys and rushed out, turning around and bumping into me.
He pressed his lips together, avoiding my gaze:
“Xiao Li… I’m sorry.”
“Song Jiaojiao ran into trouble at the bar. She went there because of me, I can’t just ignore her.”
“I’ll take her home and then come back to have dinner with you.”
He added.
I asked, “Do you really have to go? You promised me.”
Lin Yuezhou looked at me, silent for a moment, and a layer of coldness gradually appeared in his eyes:
“Li Li, I remember you are very empathetic.”
“Why can’t you show a little more compassion to someone in danger?”
“Alright, I promise I’ll come back after I take her home.”
With that, he jogged out the door.
Before getting in the car, he looked back at me through the glass window.
I waved goodbye to him.
He closed the car door, started the engine, and disappeared from sight.
I sat back down and calmly finished my dinner.
