Chapter 5
I thought that after I embarrassed Lin Yuezhou a few times, he would go back to his old ways and give me the silent treatment.
But he suddenly seemed to have changed, sending me a message saying he’d pick me up after work that evening.
I didn’t take it seriously.
It wasn’t the first or second time he’d stood me up for Song Jiaojiao.
Once, I was running late in the morning and asked him to drive me to the office.
But halfway there, Song Jiaojiao called, saying she hadn’t had breakfast, was feeling a bit hypoglycemic, and asked if he could bring her something to eat.
After hanging up, Lin Yuezhou stopped the car, his voice thick with worry and urgency:
“Take a taxi to work. Song Jiaojiao has fainted from hypoglycemia before, I’m worried something might happen. I’ll bring her breakfast first.”
With that, he stepped on the gas and disappeared from sight.
I stood under the blazing thirty-eight-degree sun, sweat dripping down my forehead.
But my heart felt as if it had been plunged into icy water, the chill spreading from my core to every part of me.
Not to mention, at that hour, I couldn’t get a taxi at all.
And I hadn’t had breakfast either…
That day, I nearly fainted from heatstroke on my way to the office. My boss ended up taking me to the hospital.
So, I’d long since stopped expecting anything from him.
But to my surprise, when I went downstairs, I really saw his car.
As I got closer, I realized Song Jiaojiao was in the car too.
She was sitting in the passenger seat, her smooth long legs draped over Lin Yuezhou’s lap.
There seemed to be a cut on her ankle, with a trace of blood seeping out.
Lin Yuezhou was bent over, gently applying medicine to her wound.
Song Jiaojiao lifted her eyes and suddenly gasped in pain:
“It hurts…”
Lin Yuezhou glanced at her, scolding softly, “Told you to be careful.”
Though he was complaining, his tone was full of concern.
My nails dug into my palm, hurting sharply.
Even though my heart had long since died, at that moment it still ached, pricked by countless needles.
Half my youth had been devoted to Lin Yuezhou.
But my sincere heart had been trampled underfoot.
A car passed by, honking its horn.
Lin Yuezhou finally looked up at the sound, saw me, and hesitated, awkwardly explaining:
“Jiaojiao fell and got hurt. I happened to be passing by, so I picked her up too.”
“I was just putting medicine on her.”
Song Jiaojiao cheerfully took her leg off Lin Yuezhou’s lap and chimed in:
“That’s right, Yuezhou was just helping me with my wound, Li Li, don’t get the wrong idea.”
She winked playfully at me, her eyes full of smug provocation.
I felt so disgusted my stomach churned.
People passing by glanced at the scene, their eyes flickering between Lin Yuezhou, me, and Song Jiaojiao.
Lin Yuezhou looked uncomfortable under their gaze. Seeing I was still standing there, he urged, “Get in the car.”
I walked over and threw my wedding ring at his face, saying each word clearly:
“Let’s get a divorce.”
Lin Yuezhou was stunned for a moment, and by the time he reacted, I had already turned and walked away.
He flung open the car door and strode after me, grabbing my wrist, gritting his teeth:
“You’re saying you want a divorce?”
“Yes.”
I took the Divorce Agreement I’d prepared from my bag and handed it to him.
Lin Yuezhou suddenly lost his temper, tearing the Divorce Agreement to shreds:
“You’re playing the divorce card again? I told you, she’s hurt, I was just giving her a ride. You have to make a fuss about this too?”
“You keep threatening me with divorce over and over. I’m really fed up.”
Song Jiaojiao ran over too, eyes red, reaching for my hand:
“Li Li, you really misunderstood me and Yuezhou. We’re just friends now. If it bothers you, I’ll walk home myself…”
I shook her off in disgust, shouting, “Don’t touch me!”
Song Jiaojiao staggered, almost falling.
Lin Yuezhou caught her, full of concern, and yelled at me:
“It’s just a seat! Is the passenger seat off-limits to anyone but you?”
“Li Li, what are you so hung up on?”
What am I hung up on?
Nothing but this blatant favoritism.
In the end, Lin Yuezhou took her hand, coldly saying:
“Get in the car. If she wants to make a scene, let her. Let’s see how long she can keep it up.”
With that, he drove off with Song Jiaojiao.
The sky suddenly darkened, thunder and lightning rumbling across the heavens.
I walked through the pouring rain, heading in the opposite direction.
