Chapter 12
After arriving in the UK, everything went smoothly.
Work progressed in an orderly fashion, the rented house came with a large yard, and the neighbors were lovely.
I thought Lin Yuezhou would take this opportunity to get back together with Song Jiaojiao.
Unexpectedly, he came to London.
After work, I saw Lin Yuezhou waiting at my doorstep.
I hadn’t seen him for a month, and he had lost a lot of weight. The dark circles under his eyes were frighteningly deep, and he looked utterly dejected-completely different from his previously spirited self.
In my memory, he always cared about his appearance, no matter the occasion.
Seeing him like this, he felt a little unfamiliar.
Suddenly, a flood of emotions welled up inside me.
There was no satisfaction from revenge, nor any bittersweet ache of pity.
More than anything, it was a sense of irretrievable loss.
When I saw him walking over, I avoided him and opened the door to go inside.
He suddenly grabbed my wrist. “Xiao Li.”
“I’m sorry… Things aren’t what you think they are. Will you let me explain?”
I pulled my hand back and shook my head. “It doesn’t matter.”
“You know, it wasn’t just that last incident between us.”
Throughout our seven-year marriage, he was always lukewarm toward me, never bothering to explain much.
Now that I’m exhausted, he’s chased me across the ocean to do the very thing he was most unwilling to do before-explain.
His face turned pale, and he choked up, almost unable to speak. “It does matter! You can’t sentence me to death over a single photo.”
Seeing people passing by, I sighed. “Fine, come in and talk.”
Lin Yuezhou followed me inside, speaking urgently. “Xiao Li, that night, nothing happened between me and Song Jiaojiao. She drugged my drink and took off my clothes to take those photos.”
“If you don’t believe me, I can confront her in person, really…”
Maybe it was because my expression remained cold, but Lin Yuezhou’s eyes grew red with anxiety:
“I know I shouldn’t have gone that night. I was wrong, Xiao Li. I promise it won’t happen again. Can we be together? If you want to stay in the UK, I’ll stay with you.”
I looked at him, my eyes full of disappointment:
“Was it only that one time?”
The anger I’d suppressed for so long was about to erupt. What made him cling to the hope that I only knew about that one incident, that he could get away with everything?
