Chapter 6
An incense stick’s time later, I was clutching my sleeves and sobbing uncontrollably.
I never imagined Xie Shanyu’s past could be so tragic.
His mother died when he was three, his father when he was five. At ten, because he had grown up to be so strikingly beautiful, his own elder brother sold him into the Southern Breeze Pavilion to be a male concubine.
Because he refused to receive guests, he was subjected to daily beatings.
That was where the scars on his body came from.
“The day you found me, wife, they had beaten me again. I only escaped by risking my life… It is thanks to you saving me, otherwise, I fear I would not have escaped death.”
Before his voice could fade, he leaned over and began to cough as if his very lungs were tearing apart.
My eyes welled with tears, filled with sorrow. “Xie Shanyu, don’t you worry. Now that you have married into my family as my husband, I will surely treat you well for the rest of my life.”
He also looked deeply moved. “With a wife like this, what more could a husband ask for?”
“So, wife, could you please put the veiled hat on me? I fear they are still searching for me everywhere.”
I nodded repeatedly.
I went to find a veiled hat that had belonged to my mother when she was alive, and it covered Xie Shanyu’s face completely.
I took the screen to the shop where I had commissioned it and sold it for two taels of silver.
Then, I prepared to take Xie Shanyu to the fabric shop to buy a few feet of red silk.
I had just finished picking out the fabric when I turned around to find Xie Shanyu gone.
My heart instantly leaped into my throat.
Could he have been snatched away by the people from the Southern Breeze Pavilion?
I asked around all the way until I found the Southern Breeze Pavilion.
The young servant welcoming guests at the door asked me with a smile, “Is the young lady here to have some fun?”
“Do you have a man named Xie Shanyu here?”
“We have all kinds of men here. It just depends on whether the lady can afford the price.”
I pulled out those two taels of silver. “Then give him back to me.”
The servant’s expression instantly changed. “Is the lady here to cause trouble?”
He called over two guards and had me thrown out.
I tumbled twice on the ground. When I stood back up, my head was spinning.
People were coming and going all around me, but I couldn’t find Xie Shanyu.
I had lost him.
