Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Jiang Xiubai had originally come to Yongzhou to visit his maternal grandfather.
It was on the way back to the Capital that I encountered Shen Shiji again.
When our two groups met, I really should have avoided him.
That was, until rogue soldiers blocked our path and assassins in black intercepted us.
Jiang Xiubai cursed under his breath, “This must be that bastard Shen Shiji’s fault!”
Jiang Xiubai firmly believed he was exceptionally well-liked; he was certain no one in the Capital or Yongzhou would ever target him.
He told me to stay put in the carriage and not move, saying it wasn’t right for a girl to be involved in all the fighting and killing.
I didn’t say a word, only silently tightened my grip on the blade in my hand.
The enemy was clearly well-prepared.
Even as Jiang Xiubai cursed Shen Shiji, he still rushed over to save him.
A longsword lunged toward Jiang Xiubai.
Shen Shiji, who was being shielded by Jiang Xiubai, clearly saw the blade coming, yet he stood there indifferently without uttering a single word of warning.
That was, until I threw myself in front of Jiang Xiubai.
The sword pierced my shoulder, but I also took the bandit’s head.
It was the simplest and most effective method.
Still, blood splattered onto Jiang Xiubai’s clothes.
I heard that outfit was quite expensive.
Seeing Jiang Xiubai’s face suddenly darken, I instinctively shrank back and muttered, “Actually… I just wanted to protect you.”
“Who taught you to protect people using such a self-destructive method?”
Jiang Xiubai dragged me back, his voice thick with suppressed rage.
He seemed to want to say more, but he was interrupted by Shen Shiji’s urgent voice.
“Ah Jiu!”
Shen Shiji’s voice trembled, his eyes fixed unblinkingly on me.
They were filled with the joy of finding something long lost.
