Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Lian Huai finally let go of me.
He opened the door.
“Mom, I was just sending voice messages to a classmate.”
His mother’s expression clearly showed she didn’t believe him.
After all, his phone had been sitting outside the room the entire time.
But she didn’t press him further.
Lian Huai hurriedly changed into his school uniform to head to class.
Before they left, I noticed his mother looking worried, her eyes lingering on his neck several times.
A sense of unease settled in my heart, though I couldn’t quite put my finger on why.
Lian Huai’s mother had known about my existence even before she got married.
Back then, she told Lian Xiucheng that she didn’t mind.
Even when her husband gave his ex-girlfriend’s ashes to their son to use as an amulet, she never raised an objection.
Only I knew that this wasn’t out of magnanimity; she simply didn’t think a dead person was worth competing with.
But if she found out that I had been present in her home for the past eighteen years…
And now, even her own son was acting this way toward me…
If I put myself in her shoes, the situation was utterly bone-chilling.
I would find it impossible to accept and would stop at nothing to drive this intruder away.
…Would she do the same?
There are many kinds of ghosts in this world.
Good ghosts, bad ghosts, drunkard ghosts, and penniless ghosts.
But none were more pathetic than me, the “Nanny Ghost.”
When Lian Huai went to school, I had to go with him.
Over the years I’d spent following him, I had effectively retaken every course from kindergarten all the way through senior year of high school.
Lately, I had grown increasingly fed up.
I’d truly had enough!
Once a certain thought takes root in my mind, I won’t rest until I’ve achieved my goal.
“Xingxing.”
Lian Huai poked me with his finger.
I gave him the back of my head and pretended to sleep.
Lian Huai was tall, so he was always seated at the very back of the classroom. He would specifically request a single desk from the teacher just so he could leave the empty seat next to him for me.
During all those years of living and studying together, I had been like a patient, gentle tutor when he was little, helping him with his homework.
After he started middle school, there were many things I no longer understood. Fortunately, he was bright and motivated, excelling in every area and never giving me cause for concern.
It was only recently that I realized how selfish he could be.
“Why are you ignoring me?”
Since it was still a self-study period, he kept his voice low. He leaned close to my ear to whisper, his breath sending a tingle across my face.
“I wish I never had to-” Before I could finish my sentence, he pulled me onto his lap.
