Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Now, I, Little Frog, am no ordinary toad.
I am a clever, cute, and beautiful toad.
My eyes are bright and rolling, my limbs are light and springy, and my back is an emerald green that is relatively smooth.
Because of this, my Toad Husband, Xiao Lan, often says I am even prettier than a common frog-the most dazzling toad in the world.
Of course, Xiao Lan is quite handsome in my eyes as well. Even though he is also a green toad, his color actually looks more luxurious than mine. Under the sunlight, his skin reflects a faint, azure blue.
I was quite indignant about this, often teasing him that he looked like a cucumber dyed with blue flowers-a real color-clash.
Xiao Lan never took offense. He has a very good temper and would only look at me and smile.
Fenghuan Palace in the West Palace is a very peaceful place for me.
Xiao Lan and I live near Princess Anping’s vegetable garden. Our home is a damp mud burrow in a weed-choked corner of the wall.
Outside the burrow lives our good neighbor-
Little Cricket.
Little Cricket’s name is Cuizhi. He’s a bit of a fool, spending all day crouching in the grass and making “qu-qu-qu” noises.
If it weren’t for the fact that he’s somewhat good-looking, I would have found a way to eat him long ago.
Hehe, just kidding. There’s no way I would eat him.
And why is that?
Because Little Cricket is head over heels for me.
I’m not just making this up. Every time he sees me, he gets so excited that he starts dancing around, circling me while frantically flapping his wings.
As everyone knows, male crickets flap their wings to attract females.
I found it a bit troubling. Once, I stood with my front legs on my hips and told him, “Red gates are for red gates, and wooden doors are for wooden doors. You are a cricket, and I am a toad. Between us, it is simply IM-POS-SI-BLE!”
As it turned out, Xiao Lan accidentally overheard this.
Xiao Lan looked at me with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, his expression very subtle.
I immediately felt guilty and said, “Don’t worry, I won’t be seduced by him. You are my dear Husband.”
Xiao Lan gave an “oh” in response. “But I saw you last night, quietly following him into the grass.”
“Heaven is my witness, Brother Xiao Lan! He led me to Anping’s vegetable garden to catch aphids. I caught so many, and I even packed some for you.”
With that, I stuck out my tongue.
The clump of aphids curled up on the tip of my tongue successfully disgusted Xiao Lan.
That’s right, he is a toad with taste and high standards; he never eats insect corpses.
Furthermore, Xiao Lan is a picky eater. He only ever eats fresh insects that live by the Central Palace Penglai Pond.
So, he turned his head away in disdain. “Be good, hurry up and swallow that!”
I huffed and swallowed the aphids. At the same time, I feigned a fierce look and used my two front limbs to bat at his head.
“Speak! Are you looking down on me?”
“No, I wouldn’t dare.”
“Then say it: I am even prettier than a common frog, the most dazzling toad in the world.”
“You are even prettier than a common frog, the most dazzling toad in the world.”
