Chapter 9
Of course, looking back now, none of that means anything anymore.
Over the years of sparring with Gu Xiaoyan, sometimes I won, sometimes I lost.
By now, it’s hard to say who really won or lost. After figuring it out, I just find myself ridiculous.
Even I have days when I get tired. I don’t want to keep struggling among them anymore.
So I asked for a divorce.
The day I asked Nie Feng for a divorce was an utterly ordinary evening.
I stood on the balcony, watching the last rays of sunset gradually disappear behind the overlapping skyscrapers not far away. Then I sent Nie Feng a message: Nie Feng, let’s get a divorce.
He didn’t reply for a long time, probably busy. A few hours later, he sent me a brief and to-the-point “?”
I stared at my phone screen, thought about it, but still didn’t reply.
That night, maybe because I hadn’t replied for so long, Nie Feng called me directly.
We fell into a tacit silence.
He didn’t ask me why I wanted a divorce, nor did he try to persuade me to stay. After a long while, he said, “I’ll have the lawyer draft the divorce agreement.”
I gave a soft “mm,” then hung up.
I don’t know why, but I suddenly thought of our university days. Back then, curfew was at 11 p.m., but whenever we called, we could talk for hours, as if there was never enough to say.
Now, there’s nothing left to say.
Not long after that call ended, he got into a car accident on his way to celebrate Gu Xiaoyan’s birthday.
It was as if even the heavens couldn’t bear it anymore and decided to deliver justice for me.
