Chapter 6
My story with Nie Feng is nothing special. We fell in love in college. Back then, he was the president of the student council and was chosen to star in a campus promotional video, which focused on the theme of “self-love, self-respect, and self-improvement” among college students. In one segment, he played the role of a scumbag who deceives girls.
I happened to pass by the filming site, not knowing it was for a promotional video. I saw a girl clinging desperately to his arm, crying and pleading, saying things like, “I’m pregnant, please don’t leave me, I’m begging you…”
He frowned and said, “Go to the hospital and get rid of it. Stop bothering me.”
I was furious when I heard that. I walked straight over and smeared the half-eaten ice cream in my hand onto his face, then grabbed the girl’s hand and indignantly said, “Girl, he’s not worth it.”
The girl stopped crying and stared at me in shock. Nie Feng wiped the ice cream off his face, looked at me with a half-smile, and then turned to the equally stunned classmates filming behind the trees, saying, “Exactly, this chapter on self-love is about promoting this kind of value.”
I blushed and apologized repeatedly, but he was very gracious, waving it off as if it was nothing.
Later, I apologized by treating him to a meal. After that, we got together.
Nie Feng was a very good boyfriend. We shared many sweet memories, and of course, we argued sometimes, but he was always the first to apologize.
Once in our sophomore year, we went hiking. For some reason, we got into a fight, and he was so angry that he walked ahead alone, probably to avoid arguing with me in the heat of the moment.
I tried to catch up with him but couldn’t keep up, and soon he was out of sight.
But after climbing just a few hundred steps, I saw him standing under a crooked tree not far ahead, suppressing his anger and waiting for me.
He had no way to back down, so he forced himself to say, “Just so you know, I’m still mad. I’m only waiting because I don’t want you to fall behind.”
When we graduated, many couples couldn’t escape the curse of breaking up, but he held my hand firmly and said we would definitely get married.
After graduation, my parents found me a great job back home. My major and abilities were strong, but I was determined to stay by Nie Feng’s side.
His early days of entrepreneurship were tough, and he struggled with cash flow. I stayed with him in a basement where we never saw the sun, sharing a single plate of fried noodles. He would always push the pitifully small bits of meat and vegetables to my side.
He said he wouldn’t let me suffer forever.
And then?
Then he really did it. Things gradually got on track.
And then he met Gu Xiaoyan.
How easily hearts change with time, and yet people say hearts are quick to change.
Just eight years, and he changed so fast that I couldn’t keep up.
And now, he no longer worries about whether I can keep up with his pace.
