Chapter 7
Chapter 7
No matter how much vitriol my mother spewed, the fact remained that Zhou Yisheng and I were divorced. There was no room for regret.
I had reached a moment of clarity on that day when I cried all night without receiving a single word of comfort. Life is long; why waste the rest of it on someone who doesn’t love me?
Eventually, my mother reached a conclusion. Zhou Yisheng was a rising star in the business world, a newcomer with limitless potential. I absolutely could not let him go that easily.
They argued that even if we did divorce, I should have walked away with at least ten percent of the shares in Zhou Yisheng’s company.
I rubbed my aching temples and interrupted their discussion. “Have you said enough?”
Both my parents turned to look at me simultaneously.
I didn’t feel like beating around the bush, so I said flatly, “If you’ve said enough, then leave. You might still be able to get tickets for the trip back.”
My mother’s eyes widened. It took a long moment before she pointed a finger at my face and started screaming at me again. She called me an ungrateful brat, a white-eyed wolf, and claimed I was cold-hearted by nature…
I glanced at her, stood up, and walked out.
Cold-heartedness is hereditary.
Mine was inherited from them; I couldn’t blame anyone else.
I found a small inn in town to stay at. Just as I finished settling in, Zhou Yisheng called.
I stared at those eleven digits I knew by heart. After a moment of hesitation, I chose not to answer.
Zhou Yisheng wasn’t discouraged. He quickly called a second time, then a third…
I finally picked up on the seventh call.
There was no voice on the other end, only the sound of Zhou Yisheng’s steady breathing.
I didn’t speak either. I just watched the call timer tick upward. Once it hit the two-minute mark, I broke the silence. “‘Our time is up; let’s part on good terms.’ Those were your words. I’m not in the habit of staying entangled with an ex-husband. Zhou Yisheng, no matter what it’s about, don’t call me again.”
There was still silence on the other end. I didn’t wait for his answer. After hanging up, I promptly added him to my blacklist.
My best friend was right: trash belongs in the bin.
Zhou Yisheng wasn’t even that great when we were married. Now that we’re divorced, why is he trying to play the part of the devoted lover?
Doesn’t he find it hypocritical?

The Divorcee’s Second Chance
Six years after our divorce, I ran into my ex-husband on a street corner while holding my three-year-old daughter.
He stared blankly at the girl in my arms for a long time before knitting...
