Chapter 2
Chapter 2
My breakup with Jiang Zheng was a messy, ugly affair.
He had escaped from the hospital to see me.
Despite being ill, he had cooked an entire table of food for me. Jiang Zheng had heard somewhere that the way to a woman’s heart was through her stomach.
But I had always forgotten to tell him that his cooking was actually terrible.
Every dish went straight into the trash.
“Jiang Zheng, give me back my keys. Don’t come here anymore.”
An indwelling needle was still taped to the back of Jiang Zheng’s hand. He reached out to take my hand, but I pulled away.
Jiang Zheng was never known for having a good temper, yet now he forced a smile. “Wanwan, please. Let’s not break up, okay?”
My only response was a long, heavy silence.
“Wanwan, I know I have a bad temper and I get jealous easily. I’ll change.
“From now on, you can wear whatever you want. You can go wherever you want and hang out with whoever you want. I won’t try to control you anymore.”
A knock sounded at the door. I turned to open it.
Four or five bodyguards instantly swarmed inside, pinning Jiang Zheng down.
“Shen Tingwan, you actually contacted my mother!”
Jiang Zheng’s expression shifted instantly. His breathing became rapid and shallow as he gasped for air.
He was having an asthma attack.
Out of habit, I reached for his pocket. No inhaler.
Jiang Zheng seized the opportunity to grab the hem of my clothes in a death grip. Between gasps, he looked up at me.
His hair was disheveled over his forehead, and his beautiful fox-like eyes were bloodshot and brimming with tears.
He looked utterly pathetic.
“Shen Tingwan,” Jiang Zheng wheezed, “if you think you’re breaking up with me, not a chance! I don’t agree!”
I pried his fingers away one by one, looking away as I spoke with cold finality.
“Jiang Zheng, even if you die right here today, I’m still breaking up with you.”
The bodyguards took him away.
A few days later, my mother jumped from the roof of the hospital.
There was no funeral.
I took her ashes and went abroad.
Three years passed in the blink of an eye.
