I wasn’t planning to deal with Yu Wei, but she still trailed after me all the way to the shelter.

I tossed back, “If you want food, go find it yourself.”

Lu Mingshen ignored her even more thoroughly, so Yu Wei stuck to Fang Cheng’an like glue.

Fang Cheng’an had a soft heart and split off some of his food for her.

The seventh night in the wilderness.

When Fang Cheng’an came back from checking the fish trap in the river, he was soaked from head to toe.

I only found out after asking that Yu Wei had insisted on washing her hair by the river. Her foot slipped and she almost fell in.

Fang Cheng’an tried to pull her back, but he lost his footing and went in instead.

I frowned. “Hurry up and take off your wet clothes and dry them, or you’ll catch a cold.”

Just what I was afraid of came to pass.

Fang Cheng’an spiked a fever the very next day.

Getting sick is the worst thing that can happen out here.

I used a clay pot I’d made myself to boil water for him, but his fever just wouldn’t go down.

With no other choice, I went nearby to look for some herbs that clear the lungs and detoxify, boiled them into a decoction, made him drink it, and laid him next to the fire to keep warm.

After five long hours, Fang Cheng’an’s fever finally broke.

Yu Wei, guilty and uneasy, said, “I’ll go find him something to eat.”

Something felt off. I grabbed her, and discovered she was hiding two fruits in her arms.

That was Fang Cheng’an’s food from last night.

Rage flared up in me. I yanked Yu Wei over, ready to tear into her, and in her struggle, two pills fell out of her pocket.

Yu Wei’s face went white in an instant.

I bent down and picked them up before she could.

Two ibuprofen tablets.

Last night, Fang Cheng’an’s fever had been burning that high, and it had never even crossed her mind to take these out.

Yu Wei stiffened her neck and argued, “These are what I use to prevent period cramps. Of course I have to save them for myself. Is that wrong?”

I held the pills out to her. “You should just go.”

I gave her a cold look. “I’m afraid one of these days I won’t be able to stop myself from slitting your throat. Out in the middle of nowhere like this, no one would ever know.”

Yu Wei turned to Lu Mingshen, putting on a pitiful act and begging for help.

Lu Mingshen frowned. “You really don’t get it?”

Yu Wei froze. “Get what?”

Lu Mingshen jerked his chin toward me. “If she’s cutting your throat, I’ll hand her the knife.”

Yu Wei pinned her last bit of hope on Fang Cheng’an.

He had just woken up not long ago, and now he wouldn’t even look at her.

“Get lost.”
