Chapter 3

Xue Chang stayed by my side in silence until dawn.

No matter how much I lashed out at him, he remained as mute as a stone, refusing to say a single word.

When we left the hospital, he even insisted on driving me home.

I was livid, my patience worn thin. “Are you some kind of masochist? What, are you regretting everything now? Do you want to get on your knees and beg for my forgiveness?”

Xue Chang’s lips twitched. With one hand shoved in his pocket, he spoke with a tone designed to infuriate. “You’re overthinking it. I simply can’t stand to see you living a comfortable life.”

I laughed out of sheer rage, pointing at the child as I questioned him, “Do I look like I’m living a comfortable life right now?”

“Get lost. Looking at you makes me want to kill you.”

I don’t know what wire had crossed in his brain, but he actually gave a faint smile. “Fine. I’ll give you the chance.”

My landlord came to press me for a second time, showing up at my door with a pile of fruit and nutritional supplements.

He had been very kind when we signed the contract a month ago, but now, every word he spoke was laced with aggression.

He spoke in pointed hints: “I really did take pity on you back then, seeing how young you were and raising a child all on your own.

“But now I’ve run into some trouble myself and have no choice. I’m in a hurry to sell the place, and I already have a buyer lined up.

“Everyone hits a rough patch sometimes. Let’s try to be understanding. I’ll do my best to give you extra compensation for the breach, as long as you move out as soon as possible.”

Suppressing my anger, I said, “No matter how fast I go, I still need time. You’re the one unilaterally breaking the contract; you should at least give me a week to find a new place, shouldn’t you?”

The landlord avoided my questioning by taking a sip of water. After a moment of silence, he said, “Let’s be blunt. It’s not that I can’t give you time to move, but you should ask yourself who you’ve offended.

“In my heart, I don’t consider myself a bad person. We’re all just ordinary people who want to live a stable life… Sigh… Since I’ve said this much, I can give you more money, but please, don’t make things difficult for me.”

Things had reached this point; there was nothing left to misunderstand.

Xue Chang sent another text: “I’ve handed the knife to you personally. It just depends on whether you’re brave enough to take it.”

Not only was I brave enough, I wanted to castrate him with my own hands.

A person with nothing left to lose has nothing to fear.

Xue Chang’s car was waiting downstairs. He didn’t come himself, but he sent several bodyguards to help me with my luggage.

I didn’t have much to begin with; most of it was the baby’s things.

I wondered how he planned to treat me.

Xiao Bao had always been an easy baby. He slept soundly in my arms the whole way, completely unaware of the treacherous fate awaiting him ahead.

When the scenery outside the window became familiar, the house I grew up in appeared before my eyes.

Sitting in the car, memories of the past came rushing back.

Bitterness, sweetness, pain, and joy-every emotion surged into my heart at once.

This house had witnessed the happiest years of my life. It had also witnessed how I fell from the clouds into the mud, how I was deceived and betrayed, and how I was kicked out like a homeless dog.

I sank into the seat, my entire body shaking uncontrollably.

The bodyguards stood outside in silence, not rushing me to get out of the car.

Xue Chang truly knew exactly how to humiliate me best.

I believed him now. He wasn’t haunting me because he felt regret, but because he truly didn’t want me to have a single moment of peace.

After we broke up, I ran into my ex at the mall.

My hair was a mess, and I was in the middle of a frantic struggle to change a diaper.

He, on the other hand, was impeccably dressed,...
