Chapter 2
Chao Jianan, the notorious bully of Qingshi Town, strode into the yamen and sat brazenly on the chair next to Advisor Wu.
Magistrate Zhao didn’t even bother to stop him.
He raised his eyebrows at me, the corners of his lips curling up. “You’re Sun Yunchun? Sun Qiuyue is your elder sister?”
“That’s right.”
“So, why won’t she marry me?”
“Of course not! My sister doesn’t like rough men. How could a ruffian like you be worthy of her!” I pointed at him angrily.
Ever since he entered the yamen, he’d been lounging about, sitting with a careless air, tapping the table with interest, his words full of amusement.
Magistrate Zhao and Advisor Wu watched the show and laughed along, not intervening at all!
“Hmm, this marriage was arranged by your father. I couldn’t refuse, but since she’s unwilling, that’s just as well.”
I was still fuming when he said, utterly unconcerned, “Forget it,” and even stood up as if to leave.
I was stunned for a moment, then quickly retorted, “What do you mean you couldn’t refuse? My sister is gentle, virtuous, and beautiful. It’s you who’s not good enough for her, not the other way around!”
Chao Jianan smiled, seemingly too lazy to respond, not even turning his head.
Outside, the onlookers said to him, “Third Master, Sun Dagui has two daughters. The elder one won’t marry you, so let him give you the younger one.”
“No, she’s puffed up like a little river puffer. She’s more like a daughter to me.”
The whole hall burst into laughter. On this day, my dignity as Sun Yunchun was swept away, and everyone in Qingshi Town said I’d gained a new father.
