Chapter 5

As soon as dawn broke, I called the real estate agent, Xiao He.

I had been swindled. It was highly likely that the couple owning the house, who were currently abroad, had no idea Xiao He had rented the place out in their names.

If I continued to stay here, I would be disturbing the soul of the departed resting within.

I had to move out.

I tried calling Xiao He multiple times, but no one picked up.

Left with no choice, I went to his agency, only to learn from his colleagues that he had resigned the day before yesterday.

That was the day right after I moved in!

His former colleagues informed me that Xiao He hadn’t handed over the deposit or the rent to the company; he had pocketed everything himself.

Furthermore, this apartment wasn’t even part of their company’s listings. They told me there was nothing they could do to help.

The six months’ worth of rent and the security deposit added up to a significant amount of money.

Over the past two years, I had been in and out of the hospital constantly, and almost all my savings had been poured into medical bills. Now that I needed to find a new place, I simply couldn’t scrape together the extra cash.

Besides, with my physical condition-having one foot in the grave already-it was incredibly difficult to find work.

Driven into a corner, I contacted a Senior Sister from my high school days.

Years ago, with my help, she had successfully pursued the boy she liked. She had been very grateful to me and told me to reach out if I ever needed anything.

For five or six years, I hadn’t troubled her with a single thing. I heard she got married this year and opened a large-scale beauty salon, so I wanted to ask if there was any work I could do.

When I met my Senior Sister, she started me off as an apprentice beautician.

The pay wasn’t high, but it was enough to help me out of my current predicament.

I crunched the numbers. Once I earned two months’ salary here and added it to the bit of cash I had left, I would be able to move out of this columbarium.

When I got home after work, I explained my situation to the empty house, promising that I would move out as soon as I saved enough money.

I knew he could hear me.

In exchange, I promised to bring him something delicious every day after work.

Before proposing this deal, I had already figured out why the food in the house was always spoiling.

It happened one day when the twins, Qiqi and Miaomiao, came over to play.

I brought out some AD Calcium Milk and cookies to entertain them. Qiqi and Miaomiao happily finished the snacks I gave them.

Shortly after they left, I noticed that the snacks they had opened and consumed were sitting exactly where they had been, completely intact.

Possessed by some strange impulse, I picked them up and took a taste. My mouth was instantly filled with the familiar flavor of burnt joss paper.

Finally, I understood-

The reason the food I bought before always spoiled was that it was being “eaten” by the invisible, intangible Male Ghost in the house.

It seemed he had quite the sweet tooth.

From then on, I tailored my approach accordingly.

After work on the first day, I brought him a beef burger.

On the second day, I brought him fried chicken cutlets and milk tea.

On the third day, I brought him sugar-frosted hawthorn berries.

During these few days, the Male Ghost didn’t try to scare me again.

Clearly, he had accepted our mutual arrangement.

In that case, I can continue living here in peace!
