“Do you regret it?”

I was a little dazed. The lights in the Interrogation Room flickered slightly before I came back to my senses. Officer Chen was asking me a question.

“No, I don’t regret it,” I replied.

Officer Chen rubbed his forehead and shook his head, probably disappointed that I showed no remorse for my act of murder.

“We’ve investigated and know that you suffered a lot because of Bai Xue in the past, but you always had a good relationship. Why did you do it? And starting from your sophomore year, your main source of income was her, wasn’t it?”

Yes, life is truly strange, isn’t it? I never imagined there would be such a reversal.

What’s more, the key role in all of this was played by that man.

After Uncle Li and Aunt Li took us in, there were suddenly two more mouths to feed at home, and Bai Xue was ill, so money was indeed tight.

That winter break, I found a part-time job, hoping to earn a little to help out at home, but with my meager income, it was just a drop in the bucket.

Uncle Li felt sorry for me coming and going so early and late. After some hesitation, he told me there was someone who could help.

It was then that I realized, on the day my parents tried to take us with them in death, I hadn’t been mistaken before I lost consciousness.

In my last moments, I saw Liang Chuan.

Uncle Li said it was actually Liang Chuan who found me first and called for help.

He hadn’t expected our family to end up like that, so he wanted to do something to make up for it.

Uncle Li was afraid I’d be upset, so he hadn’t dared mention it before.

With his mediation, I met with Liang Chuan.

Liang Chuan knelt before me and sincerely apologized.

He suggested helping my sister set up a Weibo account, which he would manage, posting about our family’s real situation to seek help from society.

This was actually what I wanted to do as well.

My parents were dead. Although I still blamed them a little in my heart, as their daughter, I still wanted to clear their names.

I was afraid Liang Chuan would do something bad, so I insisted on keeping the account myself. That way, if I wasn’t satisfied with what he posted, I could delete it at any time.

Liang Chuan agreed, and he also deleted the false report from his own account and posted an apology statement.

I didn’t forgive him right away, but I accepted his proposal.

Our family’s story already had some public attention. As soon as Bai Xue’s Weibo account was launched, it immediately gained countless followers.

We received a lot of donations from society. To thank everyone, Liang Chuan would take nice photos of Bai Xue and post them, telling those kind-hearted people that it was their help that saved this little girl.

After that night, I was actually a little afraid to face Bai Xue, but she acted as usual.

When she was lucid, she would still smile and hug me, struggling to call out in her halting speech, “Sister…”

I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. For the first time, I was glad that she didn’t understand anything.

That New Year’s Eve, my sister was unusually clear-headed, and we had a complete reunion dinner.

That night, I lay with my sister and asked her, “Xiao Xue, do you have any wishes?”

She blinked her eyes, and after a long time, stammered, “See the outside.”

At midnight, the sky suddenly lit up, and the sound of firecrackers rang out.

The pitch-black night sky was filled with dazzling, brilliant fireworks.

We leaned on each other by the window, watching the sky ablaze with fire trees and silver flowers.

I took a piece of letter paper and wrote a sentence: “Bai Jie will definitely take Bai Xue out to see the world.”

Then I folded it and handed it to my sister, saying seriously, “This is my promise to you. Your wish will definitely come true.”

Bai Xue seemed very happy and carefully put it away.

At that moment, I swore to myself that I would never do anything to hurt my sister again, and that I would give her a good life in the future.

If only she could believe me.

I held my little sister’s hand as we crossed the street.

A police officer stopped me and asked, “Whose hand are you holding?”

I glanced at the empty space behind me...
