Chapter 15
“You’re playing with your own future, do you understand?” Officer Wu was getting a little angry.
I looked at him, my suppressed emotions finally erupting as I cried out hysterically, “I don’t have a future anymore!”
She’s already in hell-how could I possibly live well in this world?
“She was a patient. She didn’t need to do anything, she just needed to trust me, rely on me!”
I hung my head helplessly, tears sliding down my cheeks. “Why… didn’t she trust me…”
I always thought my sister was a fool, that she understood nothing.
Looking back now, maybe the first time I wanted to kill her, my weakness was already etched in her heart.
She died because of me. I am the murderer.
Only by staying in prison can my heart find peace.
“I’m a useless older sister.”
I rambled incoherently, telling Officer Wu about everything that happened between me and my sister.
He didn’t interrupt, quietly listening until I finished venting.
“Bai Jie, I once had a daughter too.” Officer Wu’s voice suddenly grew heavy.
I looked up and saw a deep sadness flash through his eyes.
“She died-a glorious death.”
Officer Wu took a photo from his pocket and placed it in front of me. On it was a cute girl with a ponytail and dimples.
“Before she died, she told me the thing she was most proud of in this life was that her father was a righteous police officer. In her name, I promise you: bad people will get the punishment they deserve. Trust me.”
His expression was especially solemn, radiating an air of integrity that truly made one want to believe in hope again.

I held my little sister’s hand as we crossed the street.
A police officer stopped me and asked, “Whose hand are you holding?”
I glanced at the empty space behind me...
