Ten days later, Officer Wu came again.
This time, he was alone.
“Your sister…” Officer Wu paused, considered his words for a moment, and then asked, “Did you know she was pregnant?”
I nodded with difficulty, my fists clenching tighter and tighter, nails digging into my flesh.
“According to the DNA comparison, the child’s father is Liang Chuan. We recently got in touch with him. He said he and Bai Xue were in a romantic relationship.”
My stomach churned. I once thought that as long as a heart still beats, there must be warmth left in a person.
But some people-some people simply have no heart at all.
Tears slid from the corners of my eyes and fell into my mouth, the bitter taste seeping into my soul.
I gritted my teeth and insisted, “That’s not true.”
Officer Wu grew serious. “Then tell me the truth. That’s the only way I can help you.”
I was a little surprised he used the word “help.”
Officer Wu gave a gentle nod, clearly understanding my confusion.
He looked at me with utter certainty.
The light in his eyes seemed to shine into the darkest corners of my heart.
