Chapter 6
I was strolling by the lakeside, gazing at the lotuses in the water, and asked, “Is this lake water brought in from outside?”
Fu Ling replied, “Yes, it is. The Eldest Young Master had spring water drawn from Yujing Mountain outside the city, and there is also a well, reserved for the Master’s daily tea.”
“Oh? It’s actually mountain spring water?” I crouched down, reached into the water, and, using the surface as a mirror, caught a glimpse of a figure flashing by not far behind me. They really are wary-two people are already watching me, and yet they’ve sent another. What secret is the Dong Manor hiding that they dare not reveal?
Song Lan had clearly noticed someone following as well. He looked around and pointed ahead, saying, “My lord, there’s a pavilion up ahead. Why don’t we go in and have a seat?”
I stood up, stretching my legs. “All right, after walking for so long, I am indeed a bit tired.”
The four of us entered the pavilion.
Inside, there were tables and chairs already set up. I lifted my robe and sat down.
The two maids opened the food box and took out a teapot and some pastries, while Song Lan stood guard outside the pavilion.
I took a bite of a pastry, then tossed it back onto the plate, displeased. “It’s cold.”
Fu Ling shivered, not daring to speak.
Chang Pu hurriedly put the pastries back into the food box and said respectfully, “Please do not be angry, my lord.”
Hearing the commotion, Song Lan came in and scolded, “Is this how the Dong Manor treats its guests? Our lord is of the Zheng Clan of Xingyang. Hurry and bring a fresh set!”
Chang Pu hesitated and did not leave immediately. Song Lan shot her a fierce glare, and Fu Ling quickly nodded at her. Only then did Chang Pu take the food box and withdraw.
