Chapter 5

Tap, tap, tap…

A rhythmic sound of footsteps approached from the distance.

Knock, knock, knock. Three raps sounded against the dormitory door closest to the stairs.

“Open up, dormitory check. Is anyone in there?” A woman’s voice echoed through the hall.

No one answered.

The door was knocked on again.

Time after time, the knocking grew louder and louder, finally reaching a deafening volume.

This wasn’t a dormitory check; this was a death sentence knocking.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

If you didn’t know better, you’d think there was a demolition crew working outside.

After about ten minutes, the noise stopped.

For a moment, it was so quiet that even the sound of breathing could be heard clearly.

Tap, tap, tap…

The footsteps moved toward the next room…

“Help, I’m so scared,” Tao Ran said, swallowing hard.

“I think our dorm door is older than I am. Can these old bones handle that kind of abuse?” Zhou Yiqiang patted the door.

“Watch it, don’t be so rough. Move aside-if you break the door, are you taking responsibility?” Tao Ran pushed Zhou Yiqiang away.

The six of us sat huddled around the table, staring fixedly at the door while listening to the footsteps outside.

It was here.

I sucked in a breath of cold air.

The footsteps stopped right outside our dormitory door.

“Open up, dormitory check. Is anyone in there?” It was the same woman’s voice.

Knock, knock, knock. Three relatively polite raps.

We all knew better; this was merely the calm before the storm.

Sure enough, the knocking grew louder, and the force behind it became more violent.

We could see the dormitory door bulging inward with every strike.

Each blow reminded me of a meteor slamming into the surface of the moon.

Miraculously, after the door buckled inward, it immediately snapped back to its original shape, as if it were elastic.

The six of us breathed a sigh of relief.

Aside from the torture to our ears, it didn’t seem like much.

It looked like the dormitory check wasn’t that terrifying after all.

As long as we didn’t open the door.

Who would be stupid enough to open the door?

After about ten minutes, the dormitory check moved on.

We were safe for now.

“Oh! Let’s have a round of applause for Mr. Door! Thank you! If it weren’t for you, we’d be dead meat! Oh, door, dear door, how could we live without you? Love you, mwah! If I get the chance, I’ll offer three sticks of incense to honor you every morning, noon, and night!”

Zhou Yiqiang hugged the door and planted several loud kisses on it.

The Door: *Having you here is my bad luck.*

Just as we were celebrating in our room, the sound of a lock clicking open suddenly drifted in from next door.

No way…

There really was an idiot who opened the door?!

Immediately afterward, a chorus of men’s screams rang out.

It lasted for about five seconds before the floor returned to a deathly silence.

What happened?

No one knew except for the people in that room.

The footsteps continued toward the next dormitory.

Tap, tap, tap…

“What’s going on?” Cold sweat broke out on Zhou Yiqiang’s forehead. “Mr. Door, are you actually reliable or not?”

[If the people inside do not take the initiative to open the door, no one from the outside can enter the dormitory.]

But what if someone inside *did* take the initiative to open it?

Why would they open the door? Who opened it?

The atmosphere grew heavy once again.

“Boss Sun, analyze this for me. Comfort my fragile little heart!” Zhou Yiqiang turned his gaze toward Sun Huawen.

“Let me ask you this: do those dead people return to their dorms at night?”

Sun Huawen’s meaning was already crystal clear.

A roommate could meet with an accident without you knowing, lurk by your side, and then find the perfect opportunity during the dormitory check to throw open the gates of hell.

“Isn’t the dormitory supposed to be absolutely safe?” Huang Pang’s face turned white with fear.

[The dormitory is absolutely safe.]

There was nothing wrong with that statement, yet something felt off.

If that was the case, was the information provided necessarily correct? Did the rules have to be followed?

How should one deal with a roommate who had ‘met with an accident’?

And the Dog-Seer… why could they see them? Were they even still alive?

Tonight was destined to be a sleepless one.
