Chapter 7
Chapter 7
I felt as if I’d been struck by a bolt of lightning.
Why was he back again?!
What was the point of all that effort I just went through?
One second I was sighing over our brief, fleeting fate; the next, a fire of rage erupted in my chest.
“I can return him, right? I want to refuse the delivery,” I said, looking at Aunt Zhuang with solemn determination.
Aunt Zhuang immediately tried to persuade me. “Oh, why would you return him? You two are such a handsome couple, a perfect match!”
She lowered her voice and whispered to me, “If you don’t take him, he’ll end up like those wandering ghosts, without even a place to rest his head. I heard just now that this little groom of yours has no family up there to offer sacrifices for him!”
Guan Yi stood nearby with a gentle expression, acting as if he hadn’t heard a word.
How well a ghost lives in the underworld depends entirely on how much their living family members miss and honor them.
Down here, not every ghost lives a life of comfort.
Ghosts who receive no sacrifices have nowhere to belong. Regardless of whether they were high-ranking officials or lowly beggars and horse doctors in their past lives, everyone is equal once they reach the underworld-it’s just a different environment to wander in.
I’ve always been too soft-hearted.
I brought Guan Yi home again.
Once we were inside, he spoke to me of his own accord for the first time. “The reason I let your grandfather know I still had a breath of life left was because I wanted him to give me a clean break.”
I was beyond shocked. “What are you saying? What is wrong with you? Do you really want to die that badly?”
No sane person would have helped him with that; it’s illegal! He had clearly banked on the fact that my grandfather has dementia and wanted to keep him down here as a grandson-in-law.
Fortunately, my grandfather was lucid enough regarding the big things and didn’t grant his wish.
But why would someone be so desperate to come down here?
Suddenly, a realization hit me. My eyes widened as I asked him, “Wait, was the cause of your death actually su-”
…Suicide?
Guan Yi looked up at me.
He had narrow eyes with pupils as dark as drops of ink.
He was a man of few words and even fewer expressions, but I felt as though he was hiding many secrets.
After just a brief moment of eye contact, I could already sense his complexity. “Oh, forget it!” I blurted out, changing the subject. “I still haven’t cleaned up the blood you coughed all over my bed!”
With that, I hurried upstairs.
