Chapter 7
Someone immediately sneered.
“Does she look like she has?
“Africa? She’s probably barely even been out of the province!”
Even Ji Qing shook his head, a look of mockery on his face.
Qiao Ning narrowed her eyes, looking triumphant.
“That’s true. I asked the wrong person!”
“Ask her? You should be asking her which nearby wet market has the cheapest vegetables, or which brand of toilet cleaner works best!”
A burst of laughter erupted around the table.
She turned away and started on the next topic.
I slowly clenched my fists.
I think I was a little drunk too.
Otherwise, why would I feel so angry at such clumsy provocation?
“I’ve been there,” I said softly.
The noise at the table quieted down a bit.
Qiao Ning tilted her head. “What?”
“I’ve been to Africa.”
A flash of shock crossed her face.
But it was quickly replaced by disdain.
“Oh, come on, there’s no need to be so vain. If you haven’t been, you haven’t been!”
“Lying isn’t good. It’s very easy to get caught.”
“I’m not lying.”
“Then tell us, where did you go?”
“Kenya? Morocco? South Africa, maybe?”
She held her head high, looking certain that I wouldn’t be able to answer.
I stared at her.
“The Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

Seeing the Starlight
On the eve of our wedding, I discovered a spreadsheet on Ji Qing’s computer.
It was filled with information about every girl he had ever dated.
In my column, it read:...
