Chapter 19
Chapter 19
After that, we became close very quickly.
Ji Cheng was popular.
He was a skilled doctor and incredibly reliable when it mattered most.
At the same time, he was witty and always had everyone laughing.
I really enjoyed being around him.
Whenever he was present, even my interview subjects were willing to talk a bit more.
One day, I was following him as he sprayed the camp with disinfectant to prevent cholera.
Suddenly, a cry for help came from a vacant tent.
When we pulled back the flap, we saw a man pinned on top of a girl, tearing at her clothes.
My expression turned cold instantly. I rushed over and shoved him off.
He cursed at me and raised a fist.
Ji Cheng pulled me behind him and held up the ID badge hanging from his neck.
“If you don’t want to find yourself with no one to treat you in the future, you’d better leave right now!”
The man looked at the red cross on the badge.
He muttered a string of curses, pulled up his pants, and fled.
We took the girl to the UNHCR office and asked them to help relocate her to a different tent.
Once everything was settled, Ji Cheng patted my shoulder.
“Don’t be sad. You did a great job.”
I blinked, startled. “I’m not sad.”
Violence and crime were common occurrences in refugee camps; this was something I had known for a long time.
But he tilted his head.
“Maybe, but you look very sad.”
I froze.
I reached up and touched my face.
He suddenly laughed.
He reached out and gave my cheek a firm squeeze.
“A person’s feelings aren’t only written on their face!”

Seeing the Starlight
On the eve of our wedding, I discovered a spreadsheet on Ji Qing’s computer.
It was filled with information about every girl he had ever dated.
In my column, it read:...
