Chapter 22

During the days of my mother’s funeral, many people came to our house to mourn, and Officer Lu also came to pay his respects.

Therefore, my father could only stay in the cellar. I had to secretly bring him food every day.

Even after the funeral ended, to be safe, my father still had to stay in the cellar for a few more days.

That day, I was again going down to bring him food.

The cellar was dim and silent.

Suddenly, I once again felt that calm and frightening gaze.

I turned and saw my brother standing right behind me, looking at me expressionlessly.

I was so frightened I almost fainted, and my father was also shocked.

We had never expected my brother to come back; he had been gone for many years.

That night, the three of us sat around the table, the atmosphere awkward and heavy.

“I haven’t been back in a long time; I missed you,” my brother said, wearing a pair of tea-colored glasses to hide his eye injury. “I didn’t expect I wouldn’t get to see Mom one last time.”

“But,” he took off his glasses, and his pitch-black horizontal pupils stared at me without blinking, “what’s going on with Dad?”

I remained silent.

“Why is Dad hiding in the cellar? Why did you tell me not to tell anyone I saw Dad?”

Avoiding his gaze, I only said, “…In short, it’s to protect Dad.”

“But,” my brother’s expression remained gentle and harmless, yet he slowly uttered terrifying words, “shouldn’t a murderer pay with his life?”

My brother had already heard the rumors. We had no choice but to tell him the whole story and hoped he would keep it secret.

But he just looked at us quietly with those pupils, saying nothing.

The next day, my brother and I exchanged contact information, and he left. I had originally planned to wait a few more days before taking my father away, but because I felt uneasy, I acted early.

After that, I took my father to the city for plastic surgery, and then we parted ways. Afterwards, we kept in touch by letter and occasionally went hiking.

Until 2007, when my brother suddenly contacted me again.

A year ago, on a whim, I told my wife a story.

Because the content was bizarre and the details were too realistic, she was scared out of her wits.

Afterwards, I deeply regretted it...
