Chapter 3
Brave words are often followed by the heart of a coward.
I sat stiff-necked in my small second-floor study with Jin Chuan. My best friend, Xia Xiaoyun, was sitting across from us, currently shooting me all sorts of meaningful looks.
I endured the occasional dagger-like glares Jin Chuan sent my way while keeping my head down, staring at my phone.
[Zhizhi, are you crazy? Jin Chuan is here to tutor you. Why did you call me over to be a third wheel?]
[Also, why do I feel like he’s in an especially foul mood today? It’s like he wants to swallow you alive…]
Haha, of course he wanted to slaughter me.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t have called Xia Xiaoyun over to act as my firewall.
When I got home yesterday, Jin Chuan did something unprecedented and sent me a message. It consisted of only two words: “Explain yourself.”
And of course, I didn’t dare reply.
What was I supposed to say?
“I, Lu Zhizhi, wasn’t trying to kiss you; I was fighting against the injustice of fate”?
Jin Chuan would probably tell my mom immediately and have me hauled off to the psychiatric department for an evaluation.
Every ounce of courage I possessed in this lifetime had been exhausted by that kiss. I couldn’t bring myself to type the words “I like you” ever again.
“Lu Zhizhi, have you finished the problem yet?”
Jin Chuan’s chilly voice drifted over.
I looked up with a startled “Huh?”
Then, I sheepishly tucked my phone away. “Almost, almost.”
“Your ‘almost’ involves taking ten minutes just to write the word ‘Solution’?”
I didn’t dare speak.
“I’m… brainstorming…”
Jin Chuan’s lips curled into a smirk, his words laced with thorns. “Brainstorming? More like a brain freeze, right?”
On the table sat the Blizzards Xia Xiaoyun had brought over earlier. My cup of almond chocolate was already empty.
“Pfft.”
Xia Xiaoyun couldn’t help but let out a snicker.
Jin Chuan shot her a cool look, and she promptly shut her mouth as well.
I honestly wondered if Jin Chuan would accidentally poison himself one day just by licking his own lips.
