Chapter 6

I had the Red Jade Pavilion shuttered and seized.

Wei Zhao was carried back to my home.

Imperial physicians from the palace rushed over, but they could only shake their heads at the poison in Wei Zhao’s system.

“This poison is extremely strange and has no known antidote. It seems the Princess must find another way.”

Wei Zhao remained unconscious.

As a devoted princess in the honeymoon phase of her marriage, I naturally ran to the palace to pour out my grievances to my Empress Mother.

I knelt on the cold floor, saying nothing.

Meanwhile, Kangle was acting like a spoiled child in our Empress Mother’s arms, shaking her arm and pleading.

“Empress Mother, please, you must save Ah Zhao. I don’t want Ah Zhao to die. I want him to live.”

Shaken nearly to the point of exhaustion, the Empress Mother gave a doting sigh.

“You! Truly… It is rare to see you sisters so united in heart. I will help you just this once, but let this be the last time.”

She then looked at me, her gaze deepening.

“Ziyu, you should also properly restrain your Imperial Son-in-Law. You are newly wed; for him to act like this is truly a breach of decorum. Let this matter serve as a lesson.”

I responded respectfully, keeping my head low and eyes downcast.

Our Empress Mother’s breath hitched slightly as she gave a soft sigh.

“Between us, mother and daughter, there is no need for such distance. In time, you will naturally understand my intentions.”

I looked up and offered a grateful smile, trying my best to make my eyes look sincere.

As I left Changning Palace, Kangle chased after me.

“Zhao Ziyu, stop right there!”

I halted and turned to look at her.

Kangle’s eyes were red, looking as though she had been crying again. She really did love Wei Zhao.

The expressions on her face shifted, but in the end, for Wei Zhao’s sake, she cast aside her pride and self-esteem.

“How is Ah Zhao? I want to see him.”

I said flatly, “Wei Zhao is doing well. There is no need for the Princess to trouble herself.”

“Zhao Ziyu, I want to see Ah Zhao. Don’t push me too far!” Kangle’s eyes widened in anger.

She was pretty and cute; such a look didn’t make one angry, but rather evoked pity.

Unfortunately, I was incapable of feeling pity.

What did cuteness matter in the face of peerless beauty?

I didn’t bother with her any longer and turned to leave.

Kangle shouted behind me, “Zhao Ziyu, don’t think I don’t know! You’re just jealous of me! You only snatched Wei Zhao and the Princess Manor because you’re jealous. How can you be so wicked!”

I smiled.

I was jealous of her?

Who would be jealous of a canary in a gilded cage?

How ridiculous.

I left her with one final remark.

“You might as well go beg our Empress Mother. If she allows you to come, then come. This Princess will not stop you.”

“You think I won’t dare? I’m going right now!”

Kangle huffed and ran back toward Changning Palace.

I returned to the Princess Manor.

I waited for Kangle to show up, but she never did.

I watched the moon rise over the willow branches, and then watched the sun begin to crest the horizon.

Finally, I understood. Our Empress Mother still doted on Kangle, and thus was unwilling to let her be dragged into these storms. Yet, she had let me be dragged in.

Even though I had entered of my own free will.

Still, back then, if she had tried to stop me even once, I would have been grateful for her kindness…

Though I didn’t see Kangle, I did receive news regarding the Red Jade Pavilion.

In her fury, the Empress Mother had ordered a thorough investigation. It was discovered that the Red Jade Pavilion was the property of a manager from the Left Chancellor’s estate.

My Imperial Father issued a decree reprimanding the Left Chancellor, ordering him to reflect on his actions behind closed doors. My Imperial Father took this opportunity to strip away some of the Left Chancellor’s power.

I quietly breathed a sigh of relief. The Wei Family was safe for the time being.

If my Imperial Father hadn’t gone completely senile, he naturally wouldn’t move against two Chancellors at the same time.
