Chapter 49
As the night deepened, it was already late.
He Wei seemed to finally shed the disguise he wore during the day.
He pushed open the hospital room door and saw his mother sitting there, motionless, staring at Jiang Yu.
He turned to leave, but was called back.
“He Wei-”
His mother didn’t look at him; her gaze never left Jiang Yu’s face. As if speaking to herself, she said, “Before I was pregnant with Jiang Yu, your father’s company had just gone public. He was busy with social events every day. One day, I went to pick him up, but I was noticed by the driver of one of his business partners. That man was He Yu’s father.”
When she said this, her face was marked more by a desperate calm. “Later, I became pregnant with Jiang Yu. Do you know? I couldn’t even tell if Jiang Yu was your father’s child or the product of that scum.
“I thought about aborting her, but I didn’t dare tell anyone. I hated that man, so I swapped her baby with another’s. I wanted to take revenge on him.”
He Wei stood at the doorway, head bowed, listening to her finish.
After a long silence, he finally asked, “Why are you telling me this?”
The truth, once revealed, was ugly and hard to face.
He knew he had no right to blame his mother, but he was simply too exhausted, unable to summon any energy to comfort her.
He said, “You don’t need to explain. You haven’t wronged me; you don’t need to confess, nor do you need my forgiveness.”
After saying this, he prepared to leave.
His hand had just touched the doorknob when he heard his mother say, “I thought about whether I should tell her. That day, when I saw her lying in bed, covered in wounds, I suddenly felt afraid-afraid she might hate me forever.
“But I thought, if I use such a pitiful experience to beg for her forgiveness, that would be too selfish.”
He Wei didn’t know what to say. He lowered his eyes and opened the door.
His mother’s last words were left behind in that hospital room.
But Jiang Yu, the person who most needed to hear them, would never hear them again.
“I regret it. Can I have her back?”
The hospital was large, and he didn’t know where to go.
He simply found a bench in a corridor and sat down.
Late at night, the corridor was eerily empty.
He had always been afraid of the dark, but at this moment, he felt no fear at all.
Suddenly, a shadow appeared before him.
He Wei looked up and saw He Yu standing in front of him, carrying a bag of food.
She spoke softly, “Brother, you should eat something.”
He Wei closed his eyes and, for the first time, felt extremely irritated.
Why-why was it so hard for him to just have a moment alone in peace?
But in the end, he simply held back his temper and said coldly, “Go away. Let me be alone for a while.”
He Yu hesitated for a moment, then put down the food and left without saying anything else.

Our Final Spring
The day I found out I had cancer.
He Wei frowned and said coldly to me, “Do you think anyone would be sad if you died? No one would feel bad about it.”
I said,...
