Extra He Wei

When He Wei received his mother’s call, he was far away in Country M, across the ocean.

He had gone to great lengths to contact specialists in this type of cancer.

After reviewing Jiang Yu’s medical records, the experts didn’t immediately dismiss the case. Instead, they said that if they could see the patient in person and conduct a thorough examination, perhaps it wasn’t entirely incurable.

Only then did the anxiety that had gripped He Wei for days finally ease.

Up until that moment, he still believed he could save Jiang Yu from the hands of death.

When his mother called, he was in the middle of discussing travel arrangements with the doctors.

It was one of the rare times he hung up on his mother.

But when he called back, what he heard chilled him to the bone.

Who jumped?

Was it Jiang Yu?

How could that be? Why would she jump when she seemed perfectly fine?

He even considered whether it was He Yu having a depressive episode, but never imagined that Jiang Yu, who appeared so normal, would jump.

It was just an illness, wasn’t it? Not something that couldn’t be treated.

He didn’t even dare to think too deeply about why Jiang Yu didn’t want to live anymore.

If-if she had never let go of Jiang Qi, how much torment must she have endured all these years?

He booked the earliest flight back home.

But the plane was delayed by extreme weather and wouldn’t take off.

Through the lounge windows, torrential rain poured down, adding to his inexplicable frustration.

After kicking over a table, he finally seemed to calm down a little.

He began to regret leaving the country at all. He should have stayed by Jiang Yu’s side, never leaving her for a moment.

He should have noticed sooner.

If she wanted to live, why would she refuse treatment?

There were so many signs that something was wrong.

He wondered why she had agreed to have dinner with them.

With her personality, she should have hated them enough to never see them again.

How could he have been so foolish as to think that, after all these years, she would forgive them?

As soon as he got off the plane, he got into the car sent to pick him up.

But halfway through the drive, a sudden wave of anxiety hit him.

It felt as if someone was gripping his heart, making it hard to breathe.

Suddenly, he remembered feeling the same way a couple of days ago.

His first thought was that something had happened at home.

But in a flash, a familiar face appeared in his mind-Jiang Yu, standing in the narrow hallway, eyes lowered, looking at him.

He called her, but no one answered.

So he called his parents and He Yu.

They were all fine, which made him even more worried that something had happened to Jiang Yu.

Even if there wasn’t necessarily any connection, he believed there was.

On the phone, she had said, “You should say you’re sorry to me; maybe I’ll forgive you.”

At the time, he thought she must hate him.

Naively, he thought, then let her hate him-hate him so much she never wanted to see him again.

But now, it seemed there was nothing left that could matter to her.

If you hate me, then I’ll promise to wait until you’re cured, and never appear before you again.

That was the only pitiful bargaining chip he had left.

The day I found out I had cancer.

He Wei frowned and said coldly to me, “Do you think anyone would be sad if you died? No one would feel bad about it.”

I said,...
