Chapter 42
Suddenly, I remembered that I used to really dislike spring.
Spring in Jiangcheng is plagued by the rainy season; when spring comes, the rain never seems to end.
Back then, we still had to go to school. My family was poor, and the school was far away. We only had one second-hand electric scooter.
The old, cheap raincoat draped over my shoulders would smell damp and moldy after getting wet in the rain.
So I didn’t like spring, because it was such a hassle.
But later, on my birthday, my brother bought me an orange raincoat.
It was a really cute raincoat, and it fit me perfectly. There was even a transparent visor in the front, so the rain wouldn’t get in my eyes.
My brother said, “My little sister is so cute, of course she has to wear pretty clothes.”
So, for a short while, I forgave spring for all its rain.
Thinking about it now, it seems like there’s nothing much to regret in life.
Because I’ve already had two complete springs.
On the way to Nancheng, the high-speed train sped past the scenery outside.
I unwrapped a candy and popped it into my mouth. The taste was bitter.
Returning to an old place.
The nightmare-like abandoned building from seven years ago had finally become a stalled project.
It hadn’t changed at all after all these years.
A thick layer of dust covered the ground. Every step I took sent the dust swirling in the moonlight.
Step by step, I walked up to the rooftop. The wind lifted my wig.
This was where all the misfortune began.
And everything should end here, too.
Just as I was about to step into thin air, I got a call from He Wei.
The wind on the rooftop was really strong.
I pulled my foot back and answered the call.
“What are you doing?”
I didn’t know why he was asking, but I made up an excuse: “I’m at home.”
The lie wasn’t convincing. He Wei asked, “It’s a bit noisy on your end. Is that wind?”
“Mm,” I replied, keeping my tone steady. “The window’s open.”
“What do you really want to say?”
He Wei was silent for a while before he spoke. “I don’t know. I just suddenly feel uneasy.”
I fell silent too.
What is this? Telepathy?
After all these years of not getting along, we actually have something like this.
“Jiang Yu, live on,” He Wei said. “When you get better, I’ll take Mom and Dad and disappear for good. I promise you’ll never see us again.
“Your life is just beginning. You’ll have a wonderful future, won’t you?”
A wonderful, wonderful future?
My gaze fell on the top of a tree in the distance, stripped bare of its leaves. I felt a little lost.
“But brother, I’m not happy.”

Our Final Spring
The day I found out I had cancer.
He Wei frowned and said coldly to me, “Do you think anyone would be sad if you died? No one would feel bad about it.”
I said,...
