chapter 5
My younger brother Guan Feng suddenly called me.
He is six years younger than me, just graduated with a master’s degree, and is currently looking for a job.
He rambled on about a bunch of useless things before finally asking:
“Sis, how are you and brother-in-law lately?”
I was puzzled. “If you have something to say, just say it.”
He stammered through his explanation, and a wave of anger slowly spread in my heart.
Guan Feng majored in materials engineering. In recent years, at his university, anyone in this major who wanted to stay in the city was almost guaranteed to be absorbed into the company now managed by Xu Sen.
But Guan Feng said he was eliminated during the interview stage.
The reason: the Leader didn’t approve.
“Sis, there are eight of us in the class who stayed in the city, and I’m the only one who got rejected. So I was wondering if brother-in-law had some other thoughts…”
After hanging up, I composed myself and immediately called Xu Sen.
He didn’t answer.
Ten minutes later, he called back.
“In what way does Guan Feng not meet your company’s recruitment requirements?” I asked directly.
He paused for two seconds on the other end, then spoke softly.
“Qingqing, there’s nothing he doesn’t meet.”
“Then why didn’t he pass?”
“Well, here’s the thing. This time, the leadership team wanted to hire someone with social experience, so there was one less position. After comprehensive consideration, it was indeed my initiative to remove Guan Feng’s name. I just took office not long ago-if I immediately bring my own brother-in-law in, people will inevitably say I’m showing favoritism. Qingqing, you should understand-”
“I don’t understand.”
I interrupted him. “Guan Feng chose this major first, you transferred to management later. Even if you weren’t in charge, he would have been guaranteed a spot in that company. There’s no such thing as favoritism. Besides, you said the leadership team wanted someone with social experience, so there was one less position. You’re the deputy general manager in charge-isn’t that your suggestion?”
Xu Sen was silent for a few seconds, his tone turning cold.
“Guan Qing, you work in HR too. I didn’t expect you to be so immature at a critical moment! Anyway, the decision is made. You throwing a tantrum won’t change anything.”
He hung up.
I bent over, clutching my stomach as waves of pain hit me.
When Guan Feng got into university, his goal was to enter this leading state-owned enterprise in the industry. I never expected that as his sister, not only did I fail to help him achieve his goal, but because of this brother-in-law, I ended up holding him back.
I felt utterly miserable.
