chapter 8
His tone was icy: “Why are you here?”
Inside, I thought: I don’t even know him, yet his hostility is hurled at me for no reason.
Suddenly, he shouted at me, every word an accusation: “It was only after my son started dating you that he learned to defy us. Otherwise, he never would have gone missing.”
His words struck me like a heavy blow; I was completely stunned.
He clenched his fists and glared at me: “I’ve planned every step of his life since he was born, and he’s always followed my lead.”
“Whatever I say, he does.”
“If he had always walked the path I paved for him, he never would have disappeared.”
“It’s all you… It’s all your fault!”
“I don’t want to see you again.”
“My son is missing, and I’ve already given up on him.”
“Please don’t ever come to my house again.”
Xu Hongyuan’s words made me furious.
What kind of father is this?
“Who wants to see you, it’s…” The words stopped at my lips and I swallowed them. He’d already given up on Xu Mo, and couldn’t see him anyway. Saying anything would be pointless, and I’d only look foolish.
I decided to leave.
Someone returned.
“She’s my mother.”
I looked at Xu Mo, then at the domineering woman before me.
Xie Wenyan.
As soon as she saw me, she pointed at my nose and screamed:
“My son’s bones are mine to give, his flesh and blood are mine to shape. Now he wants to walk on his own legs, refusing to follow the path we’ve planned for him-this is betrayal, a betrayal of me.”
“Every beat of his heart should match my rhythm. How dare he make his own decisions? It’s you who led him astray.”
“I’ve long since lost all hope in him. He’s no longer my son. Whether he’s dead or alive, it has nothing to do with us.”
“I hope I never see you again.”
She actually hates me.
My mind went blank. I was sure I’d never met her before, so why does she hate me so much?
“Controlling his heartbeat isn’t enough for you-you even want to reach into his chest and crush his heart. You think that’s love, but a cage built in the name of love is still a cage!”
The words burst out of my mouth before I could think.
I instinctively retorted.
But then I was confused again.
Why did I argue back?
I was sure I’d said these words before, but I couldn’t remember when.
Why can’t I recall?
Why did I have to refute her?
Could Xu Mo’s disappearance really have something to do with me?
