Chapter 2
Beautiful women don’t need to reflect, but I’m an exceptionally easygoing beauty.
After Pei Yu left, I laid out everything I’d bought with his money over the past year.
A five-million-yuan necklace from an auction, a two-million-yuan bracelet I spotted in a display case, custom 600,000 yuan handmade leather shoes, a 300,000 yuan gown from a fashion show, a 50,000 yuan cup, 30,000 yuan slippers…
I’m not the type to force him to sell a kidney for a bag; he insisted on giving them to me.
Maybe he’s facing a financial crisis lately?
I thought about it and decided to talk it out with him.
I found out where he was, drove over, and smoothly made it to the private room door.
Just as I was about to push it open, voices came from inside.
“I told you, I just broke up with her tonight!” It was Pei Yu: “You don’t know—when I said it, her eyes got all red. I almost caved, but I held firm.”
As soon as he finished, the room erupted in questions.
“You really broke up?”
“For sure?”
“Did she agree?”
“Is it a clean break?”
Pei Yu went silent, then slammed the table: “What the hell is with you guys? It’s like you’re all waiting for me to break up.”
Buddy A: “Just kidding, haha. Didn’t think you’d actually do it.”
Buddy B: “Gotta say, good move. Should’ve done it sooner.”
Buddy C: “Yeah, your girlfriend—er, ex-girlfriend—hasn’t faced hardship. Let her fend for herself a bit, and she’ll realize how good you are.”
“Why wouldn’t I? We’ll get back together anyway, right? Like you said?” Pei Yu didn’t suspect a thing: “And she likes me so much. When I left, she even grabbed my sleeve. If I hadn’t bolted, one more look and I’d have surrendered.”
Buddy B: “Of course. A boyfriend like you is hard to find. She’s gotten used to your money these months; no one else will measure up. She’ll come begging soon.”
Buddy A: “Exactly. For families like ours, money’s no issue. Her 500,000 yuan bag? That’s less than a bottle of wine for us. But it’s not about the money.”
“No, bro, let me break it down. Your girlfriend can’t love money too much. If money’s her top priority, you’re always second. What if you go broke? She might bail. You gotta change her, make you her number one. Get it?”
Buddy C: “Right, hold out at least a month or so, or the lesson won’t stick.”
Pei Yu nodded in agreement: “Got it. Everything’s under control.”
They chatted animatedly, except for the man in the corner, eyes downcast, tapping his cigarette, silent.
Pei Yu turned to him: “Liang Zheng, what do you think? Will this really work?”
I followed his gaze; I’d seen this guy a few times—handsome face, not much of a talker.
Hearing the question, he took his time: “Don’t ask me. It’s late; I’m beat.”
Since Liang Zheng stayed quiet, the others kept assuring Pei Yu the plan was foolproof.
I stood outside listening for ages, fuming.
Even if I messed up, couples should handle it privately, sort it out together.
Why drag outsiders in and make me look small?
I didn’t barge in; I turned and went home.
