Chapter 4

This was the first time I was celebrating Jiang Bai’s birthday. For the past three years, we had been so busy working part-time jobs that he didn’t celebrate it at all.

But now, I finally had the standing to celebrate with him.

When Jiang Bai called me, I lied and told him I had things to do in the evening and couldn’t join him for dinner.

“Alright, go ahead with your work then,” Jiang Bai said. His tone was perfectly calm, betraying no emotion.

I asked him on purpose, “What’s wrong? Is today a special day? Usually, you just grab a quick bite anyway.”

Jiang Bai had absolutely no interest in food or clothes. As long as I wasn’t there to eat with him, he was perfectly content making do with a meal of plain steamed buns and greens.

During those three years we worked together, he rotated between two outfits in the summer and two in the winter.

Eventually, I couldn’t stand it anymore and bought him new clothes after I got my paycheck.

Sigh. In return, he turned around and bought me a necklace worth over a thousand yuan. It broke my heart.

Think of how much beef a thousand yuan could buy! And he spent it on a necklace.

Jiang Bai was silent for two seconds before saying, “It’s nothing. I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

I hung up the phone and giggled. I was already at his place!

Jiang Bai had a small two-bedroom apartment that his grandmother had left him.

He came back every weekend to clean it.

I lit scented candles in his bedroom, letting the faint fragrance fill the entire room.

I rolled around on his bed, my face flushing bright red as I thought about some things I probably shouldn’t have.

On Saturdays, Jiang Bai usually studied at the library until seven, so he would definitely be back by eight.

He was a very punctual person.

I finished showering and changed into my clothes by seven-thirty. While lying on the bed, I actually ended up falling asleep.

When I woke up, I realized it was already past eight o’clock!

Crap! I really dropped the ball at the most critical moment.

I quickly straightened my clothes as I heard movement outside.

Jiang Bai must be back. Luckily, he hadn’t entered the bedroom yet, or my whole night of waiting would have been for nothing.

I took a deep breath and adjusted my thin shoulder straps.

“Jiang Bai! Happy Birthday!”

I threw the door open and jumped out!

But the scene before me turned me to stone.

Su Xue was standing side-by-side with Jiang Bai, wearing a pale yellow dress.

After three years, she had become even more beautiful, like an elegant white swan.

In that instant, it felt as if time had suddenly rewound six years.

A dark, chubby version of me was hiding behind a door, watching the two of them.

Su Xue looked at what I was wearing, a hint of contempt flashing in her eyes.

Subconsciously, I covered my chest, feeling so embarrassed that I wished the ground would swallow me whole.
