Chapter 7
Chapter 7
A regular sunrise wouldn’t do; he insisted on going to the peak of Nanshan to see it.
When he was alive, he would run to that summit every morning during his daily jog. But I had never gone with him. He used to say there was a cliff at the top where the sunrise was the most beautiful he had ever seen.
Yet, until the day he died, I never accompanied him once.
In the early morning of late autumn, a faint mist lingered.
The sun glowed red, gentle on the eyes, as it slowly rose from between the distant mountains.
I turned to look at him. Under the sunlight, his naturally pale skin shimmered like diamonds, making him look like an angel.
My nose suddenly stung with a wave of emotion.
An angel?
Once, he truly was the angel in my life.
We were both doctors, thoracic surgeons at two different top-tier hospitals.
Since graduation, our surgical success rates had both been one hundred percent; neither of us had ever made a mistake.
We knew of each other as the “prodigies” of our respective hospitals.
The difference was that he had a sunny personality and was loved by all his patients. I, on the other hand, had always suffered from moderate depression. In the entire hospital, neither patients nor colleagues liked me.
That was until I met him during a specialist consultation for a complex case.
We had different plans and clashed head-on.
He lost that round. He smiled and clapped for me, saying the surgery should indeed follow my plan.
We performed that surgery together. It took a full seven hours, leaving us both on the verge of collapse. But the moment we stepped out of the operating room and took off our scrubs, the first thing he said to me was:
“I like you.”
Nobody liked me. No one ever had.
“Yu Xiaotao? What are you thinking about? I’m confessing to you,” he said, making a finger-heart and waving it in front of my eyes. “I don’t care what you think; I’m going to pursue you.”
