Chapter 6
“Stop joking around. Think carefully-what other wishes do you have left? Let’s make a list and tick them off one by one.”
I helped him draft a bucket list.
Finally, we had things to do.
That afternoon, we set up the projector at home and watched an anime movie called Your Name.
He had been wanting me to watch it for ages, but I wasn’t into anime, so I’d always put it off.
“You’re definitely going to cry!” he’d said with total confidence before we started.
But when the movie reached its climax-when the protagonists saved the entire village but forgot each other-I didn’t shed a single tear. Meanwhile, he was sobbing his eyes out.
“You’re cold-blooded, Yu Xiaotao,” he sniffled.
I had no choice but to fake a few sobs just to humor the ghost.
After the movie, it was past eight in the evening. He said he wanted to go out for Sichuan hot pot.
He used to be unable to handle spicy food, but for my sake, he spent six months training his palate. Eventually, he became immune to the heat and loved it even more than I did.
But this time, he could only watch me eat. He inhaled the rich aroma of the beef tallow in the spicy broth, unable to taste a single bite himself.
Throughout the entire meal, he kept asking me, “Is it good?”
“It’s not that great,” I replied.
He swallowed hard. “I think it looks delicious. Tell me, what does that taste like?”
“It just tastes like hot pot,” I said.
“I can see you’re salivating,” he countered.
“That’s just the spice,” I lied.
He sighed. “I want to see you eat the duck intestines and the ox aorta…”
I suddenly felt so sorry for him that I started giving him a detailed play-by-play of every ingredient-how fresh it was, whether it was tender or crunchy, and how it compared to the ones we used to eat together.
He listened with rapt attention, constantly praising my vivid descriptions and smiling brightly.
I ended up eating until I was about to burst.
That night, I held him as we slept.
In the past, I was always the one resting my head on his arm, and he wasn’t allowed to pull it away until I was fast asleep.
But his wish this time was to sleep while lying in my arms.
I didn’t mind. After all, he was a ghost; he had no weight.
However, this was the first time he lay “lower” than me.
He was usually over twenty centimeters taller than me, so I was always the one looking up at him. This night was the first time I had ever looked down at him. From this angle, I realized just how his eyes and brows looked.
He was actually quite cute.
I watched him for a long, long time, staying awake until the first light of dawn began to break.
Then, he woke up.
He bounced up, full of energy.
“I thought of the next wish! Watching the sunrise!”
I was absolutely fuming.
“You should have said so earlier! If I’d known, I would’ve actually gotten some sleep!”
