Chapter 9

While I was racking my brains for a solution, Meng Huaiqing carefully examined the wound on my face. He then spread a silk handkerchief over my wrist and took my pulse.

Yuan Heng asked anxiously, “How is it? Is the wound on my wife’s face serious?”

Meng Huaiqing glanced at Yuan Heng with a hint of dissatisfaction, yet he still replied respectfully, “The Madam has suffered a fright, and her fetal qi…”

Yuan Heng barked, “Who asked you about the fetal qi! I’m asking about her face! Her face!”

I knew this devil, Yuan Heng, didn’t care about me at all; all he cared about was this beautiful skin of mine.

But I still had to put on an act.

Tears fell from my eyes in strings as I sobbed aggrievedly, “Does the Marquis only value your Concubine’s appearance? What about me and the child… Do you not care at all?”

Yuan Heng began his act as well, pulling me into his arms and coaxing me softly, “I was just too anxious. How could I not care about you?”

His tone softened slightly as he asked Meng Huaiqing, “Are the mother and child alright?”

Meng Huaiqing lowered his eyes and said, “They are fine. I will write a prescription to stabilize the pregnancy; she just needs to take it for a few days. As for the wound on her face, it can be treated by applying an ointment.”

Yuan Heng asked urgently, “Will it leave a scar?”

Meng Huaiqing’s eyes were full of compassion. After a moment of silence, he shook his head. “No.”

Yuan Heng breathed a sigh of relief, his face brightening. “Then how long will it take to heal?”

Meng Huaiqing frowned. “At least two months.”

Yuan Heng shot him a cold look. “That’s too long.”

His tone carried a hidden threat. “Huaiqing, I hired you for a heavy price. You need to show some real skill. Otherwise, don’t blame me if I turn hostile!”

Meng Huaiqing’s brow furrowed even deeper. “Then… one month. Marquis, if the Madam’s face is to be completely restored, it requires time and careful nurturing. One month is already the absolute fastest.”

Yuan Heng glanced at Meng Huaiqing, then stroked my hair with a gentle smile. “Did you hear that, Qing Qiu? Your face will fully recover.”

Those words were like a blade stabbing into my throat.

Of course, I knew it would recover.

If I were completely disfigured, I would be useless, and my life would come to an immediate end.

That was why I had been careful when I struck; I had only damaged the surface. It looked terrifying and bloody, but that was all.

What I needed to do was buy myself time to escape.

“Marquis.” Meng Huaiqing suddenly stood up, looking hesitant. “About that…”

Yuan Heng carefully tucked in my blanket, not even lifting his eyelids. “Stop dawdling. Just say it.”

Meng Huaiqing sighed. “The temple is bitter and cold. I fear it is not conducive to the Madam’s recovery or the pregnancy. Perhaps… perhaps it would be better to return to the capital.”

Yuan Heng waved his hand dismissively. “None of your business. Right, go find Steward Li and draw a thousand taels of silver. I don’t care how precious the herbs are-as long as they can heal the Madam’s face, buy them.”

Seeing Meng Huaiqing still standing there, he frowned. “Is there something else?”

Meng Huaiqing looked toward the door. “When I came over just now, I saw Miss Hongyu kneeling in the snow. It is not good for a woman to be exposed to such cold. If the chill enters her body, it might…”

Yuan Heng sneered. “You certainly have a soft heart for the fair sex. She caused the Madam’s injury; this Marquis has already shown mercy by not killing her! If you keep pestering me, I will definitely take her life!”

Meng Huaiqing sighed helplessly, stood up, and took his leave.

I watched Meng Huaiqing’s receding figure and pondered carefully.

In my previous life before I was killed, I had heard both Yuan Heng and Cheng Wei mention this man.

Yuan Heng had said, “Divine Physician Meng is kind-hearted; he can’t bring himself to do it.”

Cheng Wei had said, “Divine Physician Meng is soft-hearted; he doesn’t dare to act.”

So, what kind of person was he, really?
