Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Back in the inner chamber, my eyes immediately landed on the medicinal sachet hanging by the bed.
Meng Huaiqing’s various actions were all hints for me to find a benefactor for protection, or to run away.
I took down the sachet and reached inside to rummage through it.
Aside from dried flower petals and medicinal herbs, there was nothing.
It made sense. Meng Huaiqing worked under that devil Yuan Heng; no matter how much he pitied me, the most he could do was hint that I should find someone to protect me. That was all.
He wouldn’t dare pass me something like a letter or a note in private.
Just then, the sound of a maid lifting the door curtain came from the outer room.
Yuan Heng’s voice rang out. “What is Madam doing?”
Cuinong replied softly, “Madam just took her medicine to prevent miscarriage. She said she wanted to read for a while and wait for you to return.”
A moment later, Yuan Heng entered.
As he took off his outer coat, his gaze swept toward me. “What are you holding in your hand?”
I toyed with the sachet. “Mr. Meng made a sachet for me. He said the scent could help alleviate morning sickness and irritability.”
With that, I casually tossed the sachet onto the table and sat down at the dressing table.
I pretended as if nothing were wrong, carefully checking the wound on my face in the mirror.
Suddenly, a dark shadow pressed down from behind, enveloping me.
Yuan Heng leaned over, looking at me through the mirror.
His breath was right by my ear, and his icy hand pressed down on my shoulder. It felt like the iron nails driven into me in my past life, making it impossible for me to escape.
I didn’t dare meet his eyes, and my body actually began to tremble.
Yuan Heng noticed something was off. “Why are you shaking?”
I put on a coquettish tone. “You just came in from outside and your hands are freezing. Hurry up and take them away.”
Yuan Heng chuckled and let go of me.
Standing behind me, he familiarly began to undo my hair bun, then took a comb to slowly brush through my hair.
I felt as if a ghostly wind were blowing down my spine, chilling me to the bone.
No, I cannot show fear or tremble.
I looked up and smiled at the man in the mirror.
“What are you smiling at?” Yuan Heng intimately rubbed my earlobe.
I leaned back, resting in his embrace.
Yuan Heng followed the motion, wrapping his arms around me from behind and rocking me gently. “You still haven’t said what you were smiling at just now.”
I smiled faintly. “Seeing you comb my hair suddenly reminded me of my mother. When I was a child, she used to comb my hair like this.”
Yuan Heng patted the top of my head. “I heard that your biological mother also committed suicide.”
Why did he use the word “also”?
My tears began to fall. “Sigh! There is something I’ve kept hidden in my heart for a long time. Actually, my mother wasn’t my father’s distant cousin. She was… a top-tier courtesan my grandmother bought from a brothel.”
Yuan Heng was clearly interested. “Oh?”
He must have investigated every little secret of my family long before he married me.
“Marquis, do you blame me for hiding it?”
Yuan Heng shook his head. “No. I like you, so I can tolerate everything about you. Besides, you couldn’t choose your own birth. What fault is there in that?”
He half-sat, half-leaned against the dressing table, facing me with a gentle smile. “You still haven’t said-why did your mother commit suicide?”
