chapter 3
For my bankrupt family, this was nothing short of winning the lottery.
By rights, this arranged marriage was meant for my older sister. But at that time, my sister was abroad and had a steady boyfriend. Back then, Mu Yebai had just taken over the company, and everyone said he was just a pretty face with no substance. No matter what, my sister refused to marry him.
So, I, the chosen unlucky one, was pushed into the role.
My marriage certificate came before my diploma. When they were tallying up my graduation credits, the marriage certificate even earned me two extra credits.
I gave a bitter smile. I suppose this counts as a blessing in disguise.
Mu Yebai didn’t like me. I knew that from the very beginning.
When we went to get the marriage certificate, Mu Yebai’s mother held my hand and waited with me at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau for half an hour.
When he finally arrived, he just glanced at me, then said to his mother, “Something came up at the last minute, so I’m a bit late.”
After that, he didn’t look at me again.
So I knew from the start-he didn’t love me.
I sat on the balcony, letting the cold wind blow over me, gazing out at the thousands of lights in the city.
The emptiness after my suicide slowly swept through my whole body.
I thought I should play some melancholy songs on NetEase Cloud to express my feelings, but unfortunately, I couldn’t operate my phone anymore.
Just as I was wondering where I should wander off to, my phone in the bathroom started ringing endlessly.
I floated over to take a look-it was that unlucky Mu Yebai calling.
We had just gotten our marriage certificate two days ago. He said there were still some assets to be divided and told me not to block him yet.
I knew his personality-he never drags things out. I assumed he just wanted to cut ties completely and never contact me again.
But now, why was he calling me so many times?
I didn’t understand.
He called my number, then tried WeChat, over and over again, relentlessly.
I listened, annoyed, wondering if I could smash my phone into the bathtub.
But I had just become a ghost, still weak, unable to touch anything physical.
So I just watched as the phone rang endlessly.
After more than half an hour, the phone finally went quiet.
