chapter 10
I watched Mu Yebai sitting in the study, looking forlorn and dejected in front of the chat window with Li Wei.
My heart was a jumble of emotions, but my resolve to scare him only grew stronger.
First, I leaned close to his ear, puffed up my cheeks, and blew air at him.
I’d seen female ghosts in “Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio” scare poor scholars sleeping in ruined temples just like this.
As it turns out, my method was indeed effective. The previously dazed Mu Yebai suddenly turned his head, and was caught off guard as our eyes met while I was blowing air at him.
My heart skipped a beat, inexplicably guilty.
Mu Yebai glanced around, and after confirming nothing was amiss, raised his hand and closed the chat window on the computer.
He leaned back in his chair, exhausted, pinched the bridge of his nose, and let out a long sigh.
I was a bit puzzled. Isn’t his white moonlight about to return? Why is he so sad?
Could it be that, after five years of marriage with me, he feels unclean and unworthy of Li Wei?
The more I thought about it, the more aggrieved I felt. I clenched my fists and slammed them against the bookshelf behind him.
It was just a subconscious reaction out of anger, but I hadn’t expected to actually knock a book off the shelf.
The book had a hard cover, thick and heavy, and the loud thud it made when it hit the floor startled both Mu Yebai and me.
I was shocked because: I could actually touch physical objects now?
Mu Yebai was startled because: Why did the book fall for no reason? Is this place haunted?
Both Mu Yebai and I looked down at the floor.
Photos tucked inside the book scattered out. Looking closely, I saw that they were pictures of me, and among them were one or two photos of me with Mu Yebai.
Only then did I remember: Before Mu Yebai’s mother passed away, she took Mu Yebai and me on a trip to the seaside. Under her matchmaking, Mu Yebai reluctantly took a few photos with me.
Mu Yebai’s mother had the photos printed and gave a set to both Mu Yebai and me.
Her intention was for Mu Yebai to put them in a frame and display them in his office at work.
As for my set, I framed every single one and placed them in the most prominent spot.
But I hadn’t expected Mu Yebai to hide these photos so deeply.
“You bastard, do these photos really disgust you that much?”
When Mu Yebai bent down to pick up the photos, I couldn’t help myself and waved my hand again.
This time, the water cup on the table was knocked to the floor.
Leaving behind a stunned Mu Yebai, I drifted out the window and returned to my own home.
Hmph, if you think looking at my photos is unlucky, then I’ll make sure you see something even more unlucky.
