Chapter 2

It was raining that day, which meant more delivery orders. I was weaving through the streets on my little yellow scooter when my sister’s counselor called me.

“Are you Cheng Xiatian’s older sister? Cheng Xiatian got into a fight with her classmates.”

I couldn’t believe my sister would ever get into a fight.

She was such a quiet, timid person-the kind who wouldn’t say a word even if you poked her with a stick.

When we were kids, a boy sitting behind her used a lighter to singe her hair, and she had been too scared to even tell the teacher.

I hurried to her school on my scooter.

The rain was pouring down, making the roads slick. I wiped out once on the way, scraping the skin off my knee.

I was too anxious to care. I just hauled the scooter back up and kept charging forward.

When I arrived at the school, I saw my sister standing in a corner of the counselor’s office.

She was biting her lip, not shedding a single tear, silently staring at the three girls standing in front of the counselor.

Those three girls were well-dressed, clearly city kids.

They were all talking at once, listing my sister’s supposed crimes to the counselor.

“She never joins us for dorm dinners. She’s so antisocial. When we try to talk to her, she acts like she can’t be bothered. We asked her what celebrities she likes, and she just stayed silent.”

“She gets up at seven every morning, which really messes with our sleep.”

“Our dorm wanted to chip in for an air conditioner, but she actually said she didn’t have the money. I mean, is there really anyone left who can’t even come up with a few hundred bucks?”

The counselor was a young man. Clearly overwhelmed by so many female students, he adjusted his glasses and stammered, “Even so… you shouldn’t have locked Cheng Xiatian out of the dorm all night.”

Locked my sister out of the dorm all night? I immediately caught the main point, my eyes snapping toward those three flashy girls.

The leader of the group had pink manicured nails adorned with a Little White Bear. She blinked and muttered, “We were all asleep. Who could’ve heard her knocking?”

Standing in the corner, my sister only started crying when she saw me arrive.

She had been like this since she was a child-if no one was there to back her up, she didn’t feel like she had the right to be aggrieved.

Only when she saw the sister who doted on her did all her bottled-up resentment come flooding out.

With red-rimmed eyes, she whispered, “I’m sorry, Sis. I caused trouble for you.”

I wiped her eyes and said, “You didn’t cause trouble for me. Others are looking for trouble with us.”

I marched over aggressively, slammed my yellow helmet onto the desk, and roared at the counselor.

“What kind of teacher are you? They locked my sister out of the dorm, and you’re not punishing them?”

“It wasn’t intentional… they just didn’t hear her…” the counselor tried to play peacemaker, his voice trailing off.

The three girls jumped in surprise, huddling together and pointing at me.

“What a shrew.”

“Low-class people really have no manners.”

“So scary. I’ll never have to deal with someone like this again in my life.”

They were city people, they were ‘polite,’ and I was from the countryside, so I was a ‘shrew.’ I didn’t care about any of that; I just wouldn’t let my sister be bullied.

I said, “I don’t care about your excuses. I sent my sister here in good health, and you locked her outside. I want an explanation today!”

The counselor kept trying to placate me while making excuses for them. I refused to back down. Finally, the leader, the Little White Bear girl, lost her temper.

She stepped forward aggressively and said to me, “It takes two to tango. Why do you think none of us like Cheng Xiatian? Isn’t it her own fault?”

My sister, such an honest, simple girl. The kind of girl who would cry for three days when a chick she raised died.

What could she possibly have done wrong?

In an instant, my blood boiled. In a fit of rage, I reached out and slapped the Little White Bear girl across the face.

I never imagined-

That this single slap would ruin the rest of my life and my sister’s.
