Chapter 4

Monday, at the office.

I didn’t expect to run into Pei Ze in the elevator.

Because of the awkwardness from that night, I instinctively averted my eyes and lowered my head. But then, realizing we would be seeing each other often from now on, I plucked up the courage to look up and force a smile at him.

Pei Ze, however, didn’t react at all.

He walked over to my side, his expression as icy as ever.

Fine then.

I guess I’m the only one feeling awkward.

Just then, a large crowd of people pushed their way in. Pei Ze was squeezed right behind me.

Because our bodies were pressed so close together, I could actually feel his body heat and catch his scent. He had a very light, faint woody fragrance about him.

I didn’t know what brand of cologne it was, but it smelled wonderful.

Actually, I had caught a faint whiff of it that night too. But since my mind hadn’t been wandering in that direction, I’d ignored it.

Right now, his warm breath brushed against the back of my neck, accompanied by that familiar scent. Every single detail from that night suddenly flashed through my mind.

My face flushed red all the way to my ears from nerves.

How pathetic!

I cursed myself inwardly.

It was clearly just a mix-up, and it was already over. So why was I still so bothered by it?

Pei Shi seemed to sense my discomfort, as he pulled back and retreated toward the side.

Once a group of people got off, I could finally breathe again. When we reached my floor, I practically bolted out of the elevator.

Not long after I sat down at my workstation, I received a message from Pei Ze.

[Are you afraid of me?]

I froze, not knowing how to respond for a long time.

We had added each other on WeChat because of work, but we had basically zero interaction. Our most recent chat was from half a month ago when we exchanged some files.

Seeing that I hadn’t replied, another message from Pei Ze followed.

[You were clearly the one who took advantage of me that night. So why are you acting like I’m the one who’s going to eat you alive?]

My face, which had just returned to its normal color, instantly turned beet red again.

[That’s not it at all! You’ve misunderstood!]

[What happened that night was really just an accident! I mistook you for Jiang Chen! If you’re offended, I apologize again!]

[Please, don’t take it to heart, I’m begging you! We have to see each other every day at work, and I don’t want it to be awkward all the time.]

[Can we just act like nothing happened? Please!]

I sent off a flurry of messages in a fit of passion, followed by several humble, crying emojis.

After an unknown amount of time, Pei Ze sent back a brief reply: [I was just teasing you.]

[I didn’t take it to heart. Don’t worry about it so much.]

I calmed down and quickly replied with an “Okay.”
