Early the next morning, Jiang Chen arrived carrying several large bags of groceries.
“How are you feeling? Are you doing any better?” he asked as soon as I got up.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I was just a bit tired yesterday.”
“It’s getting late. Go get washed up, and I’ll start on breakfast.”
I nodded.
By the time I came out of the bathroom, Jiang Chen was already busy in the kitchen.
Jiang Chen and I worked at the same company; it was an office romance. We had been dating for over a year, and during that time, he had absolutely spoiled me. On his days off, he would always come over to cook for me. With him around, I hardly had to lift a finger. He even took care of all the laundry and cleaning.
On holidays and anniversaries, he would take me out on dates and prepare thoughtful gifts. Even during our occasional arguments, he was always the first to admit fault, never letting me shed a single tear.
I’m the type of person who takes a long time to warm up to others and finds it difficult to open up. So, in the beginning, I had approached the relationship with Jiang Chen with a “wait and see” attitude. But after a year, he had more than passed my appraisal.
That was why I had decided to take our relationship to the next level last night. I just hadn’t expected things to go so sideways and result in such an embarrassing blunder.
Once Jiang Chen had finished preparing four dishes and a soup, he called me over to eat.
“It’s all your favorites. Give them a try.”
Jiang Chen scooped a bowl of rice for me and looked at me expectantly.
“Thanks,” I said, nodding as a warm feeling spread through my chest.
Even though what happened yesterday was just an accident, I still felt a bit guilty toward him.
Halfway through the meal, I couldn’t help but ask, “What’s your roommate, Pei Ze, like as a person?”
“Pei Ze?”
Jiang Chen paused for a moment. “He’s pretty decent. Why do you ask?”
“It’s just… every time I go to see you, he seems so cold. I was curious about how you two get along on a daily basis.”
“He’s a bit slow to warm up to people, and he definitely comes off as aloof. But he’s actually a good guy.”
“I see.”
“Is he single? Does he have a girlfriend?”
“I’ve never seen a woman come by to see him. He’s a bit of a loner, so he’s probably single. Though, plenty of people at the office are chasing after him.”
Pei Ze worked at the same company as Jiang Chen and me, though we were in different departments. He was very handsome, so he was quite popular. I had heard rumors about that before.
“Huh? Why the sudden interest in him?” Jiang Chen asked, taking a bite of food.
“Don’t tell me you’ve had a change of heart and fallen for him?”
He was clearly joking, but I was quick to deny it. “No! How could I?”
Jiang Chen laughed. “I’m just teasing. I know my baby only has eyes for me.”
“As long as you know.”
