Chapter 19

At Liang Zai’s shout, my body reacted even faster than my mind. Without hesitation, I grabbed Qi Mubai and ran, not daring to look back.

Neither of us can do much now. If we don’t run fast enough, we’ll really be holding everyone back.

The Zombies have evolved a bit since the beginning, but they’re still far behind us, except for one.

That must be the High-tier Zombie Liang Zai mentioned.

I ran as fast as I ever had in my life, sprinting all the way to the guesthouse. Someone inside opened the door for us. Qi Mubai and I entered first; Cheng Cang was the last one in.

I looked around in alarm. “There aren’t enough people! Two are missing!”

No one spoke. Liang Zai squatted in the corner, the other Superpower Users were silent. Only Cheng Cang sighed, “Old Yu and Jin Xie sacrificed themselves to protect us.”

A quiet man and a youthful-looking young man flashed through my mind. I didn’t even know their names; we had only exchanged a few words along the way.

Suddenly, I really wanted to cry.

This was the first time I had witnessed loss so closely. It made me feel utterly desperate and terrified.

I looked at Qi Mubai, my voice already trembling, “You have to live well, okay?”

Qi Mubai lowered his eyes and looked at me, his voice uncommonly gentle. “Mm, I know. Don’t cry.”

After a short rest, Cheng Cang asked the couple about the survivors’ situation.

The couple were the owners of the guesthouse. They had three daughters, and the others in the house were people they had taken in during this period. Because supplies were running short, they tried to seek help from the Base.

“How many people are here now?” Cheng Cang asked.

“Including our family, there are twelve people in total,” the man of the house sighed. “It’s almost dark. We can’t leave soon. I’ll find you something to eat.”

Cheng Cang made no comment.

It was a very simple dinner, and it was also the last of the supplies here.

Everyone in the house gathered. People were happy to see the rescuers. After a round of self-introductions, I more or less understood the situation.

Besides the owners’ family of five, the others included a married couple, three college students (two men and one woman), and a girl who looked really cool with dreadlocks and a tattoo on her neck. The last one…

She hadn’t shown up yet?

“We’re still missing one?” Liang Zai asked.

The Woman of the House looked up. “She’s coming.”

I turned to look. Approaching us was a girl in a white dress, probably in her twenties, her face wearing a gentle smile.

“Sorry I’m late.”

After sitting down, she introduced herself: “My name is Sun Mo. I used to be an elementary school music teacher…”

She kept talking, but the more I listened, the more I felt something was wrong. This voice… wasn’t she the one who screamed and attracted the Zombies just now?

Clearly, Liang Zai noticed it too. He slapped the table and interrupted Sun Mo. “Was it you who screamed, brought the Zombies, and got my teammates killed?”

The whole room fell silent. Sun Mo was obviously stunned for a moment, then said, “First, I’m truly sorry. I apologize. Second, it was a mistake-I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. Finally, we’re all together now to figure out how to escape. As for the past, there’s nothing any of us can do…”

Brilliant!

On the surface, she apologized, but every word was an excuse. In the end, she even talked about the bigger picture to put Liang Zai down. Amazing.

Sure enough, Liang Zai was so angry he was gasping for breath. Cheng Cang, afraid things would get worse, quickly stopped him. “Sit down!”

Liang Zai sat down, still unwilling.

We agreed to leave at noon the next day.

Since Zombies are generally most active at night, reaching a peak at midnight, by noon their energy is weakest, which is the best time to leave.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Early the next morning, I opened the window and saw heavy snow falling outside.

I got ready and went downstairs to check the situation. But as soon as I opened the door, I saw Qi Mubai.

I am a Zombie.

Early in the morning, my mom burst into my room, yanked open the curtains, and, wearing an apron and brandishing a spatula, shouted at me: “Still sleeping? Stayed up...
