Chapter 18

Not long after leaving the Base, our vehicle crashed into a Zombie.

Fortunately, there weren’t many. A few Superpower Users dealt with several right away, leaving just one remaining.

“This one’s a Second Tier,” Liang Zai said. “A bit tricky. Looks like I’ll have to handle it.”

He opened the car door and jumped out. I watched him fight, the sounds crackling and popping, my heart pounding with worry. After all, he was someone I knew; seeing him turn into a mindless Zombie would be hard to bear.

Cheng Cang, sitting in the passenger seat, explained, “Zeng Liang is one of the few people in the Base who has awakened three types of Superpower. This kind of Zombie is nothing to him.”

It really is feast or famine. Some people have none, while others have three at once.

Qi Mubai suddenly let out a cold laugh.

I looked at him in confusion, and he sneered, “You still have the energy to worry about others? Better worry about yourself first.”

Me: “…”

Soon, the Zombie was dealt with. Liang Zai climbed back in, grinning, “Duoduo, wasn’t I awesome? This one’s pretty nice-here, it’s for you!”

He tossed something into my hands before I could react. Looking down, I saw a purple, crystal-like object. It was rather beautiful.

“This is a Zombie’s Crystal,” Liang Zai explained. “The higher the tier, the prettier the Crystal. What I want most in this life is the Crystal from a Fifth Tier Zombie, which is currently the highest level. But those are extremely rare; Second and Third Tier are much more common…”

I hadn’t even had time to thank him when Qi Mubai let out another cold laugh.

Seriously, what’s wrong with him today?

From the Base to our destination was about five hundred kilometers.

That place used to be a famous tourist spot, and the people we were supposed to rescue were trapped in a local guesthouse, surrounded by a Zombie Tide.

We encountered many Zombies along the way, but our team was strong, so there was little real danger.

After more than four hours, we finally arrived.

“Get out!” Cheng Cang said, scanning the surroundings warily. “I sense danger. We must be extremely careful!”

I was nervous, too scared to get out of the car. But seeing Qi Mubai behind me, I mustered my courage.

If even I was afraid, who would protect him?

With that thought, I stood firmly in front of Qi Mubai. If anything happened, I could shield him right away-after all, I couldn’t die.

Qi Mubai, however, had no idea about my good intentions. He just walked on his own, not saying a word to me.

I was fuming inside, but this was really not the place to argue, so I had to hold it in.

As we approached the guesthouse, I felt a surge of hope. Luckily, we’d kept quiet and the Zombies hadn’t noticed us, making things go smoothly. But just then, a face appeared in the guesthouse window, followed by a woman’s voice.

“They’ve come to save us!”

She shouted so loudly that I instantly felt uneasy. Sure enough, the next moment, Zombies from all directions started rushing toward us.

It’s over.

Completely over.

“There’s a High-tier Zombie! Run!”
