Chapter 13

The whole way was actually very safe; we didn’t run into any Zombies.

I had to admit, our luck was pretty good.

The Base was built in what used to be the city center of B City. The construction was huge-it must have taken a long time to finish.

There were guards at the gate. When they saw us approaching, they immediately asked, “Are you survivors?”

My mom hurriedly shouted, “Yes! We’re all normal people, you can check if you don’t believe us!”

The guard waved, and someone inside came out with a machine. He scanned the three of us thoroughly. I was nervous, worried they’d find out I was a Zombie.

But after the scan, the person said, “All normal!”

I breathed a sigh of relief.

The gate finally opened. My mom thanked them over and over and pulled us inside. Then, those people led us into a room, where a man with a small mustache asked, “Does anyone among you have a Superpower?”

My mom was stunned. “No, the three of us are just ordinary people.”

The mustached man’s face showed obvious disappointment. “Then you’ll go to Zone F.”

I didn’t know what Zone F was, but it seemed a bit out of the way. We walked for quite a while before we got there.

By the time we settled in, it was already completely dark.

Each of us was assigned a room. The rooms weren’t big, but they had everything we needed. The only downside was the poor soundproofing-you could hear a sneeze from next door.

My mom was placed in the room opposite mine, Qi Mubai was next to me, and on the other side, there seemed to be a girl; I could vaguely hear her talking softly.

After a tiring day, I lay down early and fell asleep without even dreaming.

Early the next morning, my mom woke me up again.

For a moment, seeing her face, I thought I was back home. Then I glanced around the room and remembered what happened yesterday.

“Get up! The sun’s so nice outside, come out and get some sunlight!”

I dragged myself up and went out to find my mom sitting on a small stool, chatting with a group of elderly ladies.

My eyes widened.

How did this old lady fit in so quickly?

Seeing me, she waved, “This is my silly daughter. Come over and meet Auntie Zhang, Auntie Li, Granny Wang…”

Me: “…”

The gossip among these ladies was always top-notch.

After sitting there for an hour, I pretty much figured out the rules of this place.

The founder of this Base is someone named Cheng Cang.

Here, Superpower Users are given special treatment.

Not only do they have to deal with Zombies every day, facing extreme risks, but they also take on various jobs.

For example, Wood Element Superpower Users are responsible for accelerating the growth of vegetables and fruits to meet the Base’s needs. Plants that would normally take ages to mature only need about ten days in their hands. Water Element Superpower Users provide water, Electric Element Superpower Users supply electricity…

The ratio of Superpower Users to ordinary people is about one to three. The Base is divided into six zones from A to F. Zones A and B have much better living conditions and food, so only Superpower Users live there. The other zones are pretty average and are for ordinary people.

Still, under these circumstances, it’s already rare that someone is looking out for ordinary people.

Those with ability do more work, and it’s fair that they get more.

Cheng Cang really is an impressive person.

These ladies had already shared all the gossip about the Base. My mom listened with sparkling eyes, while I was getting dizzy from the sun and decided to go back to my room to watch the TV series I’d downloaded earlier. As I was about to go in, I glanced at the tightly closed door next to mine.

Up to now, I realized I hadn’t seen Qi Mubai yet.

I knocked on the door, but there was no response. Worried something might have happened, I was about to ask my mom when Qi Mubai’s voice came from behind me.

“Looking for me?”

“You scared me!” I nearly jumped. “Where did you go so early in the morning?”

“New place, gotta get familiar with it, right?” Qi Mubai was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans today, with a windbreaker over it because of the morning chill. He looked really stylish, just like a male celebrity. His distinctive blond hair made him even more eye-catching. Girls passing by couldn’t help but glance at him, then run off blushing.

He really reminded me of my naïve self back then.

I used to think he was good-looking too, but after I truly got to know him…

Heh.

Suddenly, a crowd surged forward. A little boy ran while shouting, “The Leader is coming! The Leader is coming!”

What the heck?

I turned to look. The man surrounded by the crowd looked oddly familiar.

I tried to recall, but before I could, his sharp gaze locked onto me.

He stared at me for a moment, then strode over.

“It’s you.”
