chapter 6
There weren’t many people stationed at this checkpoint.
Two police officers were inspecting another car.
Inside that car sat a family of four, with two children already asleep in the back seat.
In front of my car stood a tall police officer.
He knocked on my window.
He asked me to show my relevant documents.
As I reached for my documents,
I glanced at the Man in the Passenger Seat beside me.
He seemed quite calm, his head buried in his phone.
I tried my best to stay calm as well.
One hand quietly reached for the door handle,
ready to abandon the car and run for my life at any moment.
At the same time, I was worried.
If I angered him and he detonated the Bomb, what chance would the family of four in the car ahead and the stationed police officers have to survive?
The atmosphere was tense, like a drawn bow.
But just then, the Man in the Passenger Seat actually spoke to the police officer.
“Bro, what’s going on? Why are the checks so strict in the middle of the night?”
I nearly fainted from shock.
How did he dare to ask that?
The police officer continued copying my ID Card information, not even looking up: “Nothing much, just go home early. Try not to go out these next couple of days.”
“We all know, officer. Didn’t a Murderer case happen?” He pointed at the radio. “It was just broadcast citywide.”
Then he put on a gossipy expression.
“It’s terrifying, everyone’s on edge. Bro, can you give us a hint-did you catch the Murderer?”
The police officer reached out his hand.
“You, show me your ID Card too.”
[So intense, how could he possibly have an ID Card?]
[We’re doomed, it’s all the driver’s fault.]
[The movie adaptation changed a lot. I don’t remember this part in the original case. Why did the director give the driver so much screen time?]
As the Bullet Comments scrolled by,
my heart leapt into my throat.
I watched as the Man in the Passenger Seat reached into his pocket.
I gritted my teeth, ready to push open the door and tackle the police officer in front of me,
hoping to minimize the damage from the Bomb.
But in the next second,
the Man in the Passenger Seat pulled out an ID Card.
“Here you go, officer. We’re all decent people. It’s the holidays-we just want to get home quickly.”

Late at night.
I picked up my last ride-share passenger.
The passenger had just gotten in.
Suddenly, a line of Bullet Comments appeared in front of me.
