Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I had a wonderful time with my sister.
She would intentionally make mistakes and then convince me to take the fall for her.
But the moment I nodded in agreement, she would snap at me.
“Don’t you have a mouth? Don’t you have a brain? You just do whatever anyone tells you to? If you didn’t do it, why are you taking the blame? Can’t you argue with me? Now, say it with me: whoever did it should admit it; I didn’t do it, so I’m not going.”
She was very angry, which was a bit scary.
“Whoever did it should admit it; I didn’t do it, so I’m not going,” I murmured timidly.
“Louder!” Sister said. “Did you not eat today?”
I immediately repeated it at the top of my lungs.
Sister jumped in surprise.
“Whoa! So fierce, so cute. Remember, never take the fall for someone else in the future. Someone who truly loves you wouldn’t have the heart to let you take the blame. If someone asks you to take the rap, it means you aren’t important to them at all. There’s no need to pay attention to someone who doesn’t cherish you-tell them to get lost. Understand?”
I nodded. “Understood!”
The System suddenly piped up: “This is entrapment.”
Sister replied, “None of your business.”
“What’s entrapment?” I asked.
Both Sister and the System went silent.
After a long pause, Sister asked, “You can hear it?”
I nodded.
Sister and the System let out a series of sharp, piercing screeches.
System: “Alert! Alert! I must wipe her memory.”
Sister objected: “I won’t allow it. She heard it through her own ability; what right do you have to delete it at will? Can’t you just shut your mouth and stop talking nonsense? Do you have any idea how much you startled my sister by interrupting?”
System: “Song Yufei, you’re something else!”
From then on, the System never spoke in front of me again.
That is, until I was six years old.
A notification chime from the System suddenly rang out:
“Congratulations to the host for completing the capture mission. Current favorability has reached 100. Mission rewards have been settled. The host is about to return to her original world. Countdown beginning: nine, eight, seven…”
Sister was shocked. “Oh, for heaven’s sake! You big softie, how were you so easy to win over? System, you’re screwing with me, aren’t you? Just you wait; I’m giving you a one-star review when I get back. Little sister, you must remember what I told you! Stay away from a man named…”
Sister and the System both vanished.
I was scared to death.
I went back to find my mother, crying.
“Mother, Mother! Sister is gone! She was kidnapped by something called a System!”
My mother was bewildered.
“What sister? I only ever gave birth to you.”
I was speechless and helpless.
*System, you’re screwing with me, aren’t you?*
My mother took me to listen to the head monk chant scriptures again.
This time, I played it smart.
I said I remembered now-that I didn’t have a sister at all and that I had been making it up.
The head monk of Wan’an Temple gave me a deep, knowing look and lightly tapped my forehead with his finger.
“Being too persistent is not necessarily a good thing, Benefactor. When it is time to remember, you will naturally remember. For now, let it be forgotten.”
It felt as if something had been injected into my brain.
From then on, I gradually forgot that I ever had a sister named Song Yufei, and I forgot about the System.
In my fourteenth year, the year of my hair-pinning ceremony, I met Pei Heng.
When I was sixteen, he came to my house to propose marriage.
After that, I became like a little shadow following him around, always revolving my life around him.
As a prince, Pei Heng had been enfeoffed as Prince Rui.
The current Emperor favored the Crown Prince.
However, the Crown Prince was sickly and weak, and his younger brothers were all starting to get restless.
Prince Rui belonged to the Crown Prince’s faction and supported him staunchly.
Others thought he was being hypocritical, intentionally currying favor with the Crown Prince in hopes that if the Crown Prince were to pass away, the Emperor might name him the next heir in recognition of his diligent service.
Prince Rui was targeted by assassins.
At the time, we were returning from a spring outing, sharing the same carriage.
Seeing the cold glint of a blade, my first instinct was to shield Pei Heng. But suddenly, I felt a jolt, and a woman’s voice screamed in my ear:
“Don’t harm your own body! Your health is your greatest asset; without it, you don’t even have a seat at the table! Take good care of your body, do you hear me? Don’t make me come over there and deal with you!”
*This woman is terrifying…*
I stopped immediately, grabbed a cushion from the carriage, and hurled it at the assassin.
The assassin’s sword veered three inches off course, stabbing Pei Heng in the arm instead.
Later, the assassins were eliminated.
Pei Heng clutched his wound, looking at me with a heavy gaze.
“Yuhui, what happened to you just now?”
What happened to me?
He had the nerve to ask.
I asked him aggressively, “Why did those assassins try to kill you? What did you do?”
It was as if someone had told me: *The best defense is a good offense. This feels like the perfect time to shift the blame.*
Pei Heng froze, looking at me in disbelief.
“I’m injured!”
“Let’s call off the engagement. It’s too dangerous to be around you. I just want to live an honest, stable life. A troublesome man like you isn’t right for me.”
I gave him a reproachful look and stepped out of the carriage with an air of haughty pride.
I remembered.
I remembered everything.
Sister told me to stay away from Pei Heng, yet I had actually gone and gotten engaged to him.
It’s all that old monk’s fault at Wan’an Temple.
I want to file a complaint and give him a one-star review.
