Chapter 99
Chapter 99
“Why would she be afraid to see you?” Tu Nan asked, puzzled.
“Perhaps she’s afraid of bringing back some unpleasant memories,” York’s voice was honeyed and sweet. “Why don’t you ask her when she arrives in a moment?”
Tu Nan froze slightly.
She looked up at York. A mocking smile played on his lips, as if he had seen right through her.
“Are you wondering how I knew she was coming?”
Tu Nan remained silent.
“It was just a stroke of bad luck. Two nurses were gossiping today, and I happened to overhear,” York said, his tone a mix of truth and lies. “I heard He Ling isn’t doing too well. It’s quite worrying. After all, we’re old acquaintances; I couldn’t bear to just sit by and watch her suffer.”
“What did you do?” Tu Nan asked calmly.
“I simply shared a bit of my own medicine with her,” York smiled triumphantly. “Don’t worry, the medicine has no side effects. At most… it causes a few hallucinations.”
At this point, Tu Nan knew for certain that York had long since realized she was lying to him.
“When did you find out?” Tu Nan couldn’t help but ask in surprise.
“Your story was quite entertaining,” York sighed softly. “If Yi Weichun hadn’t mentioned to me once that she was an only child, I really might have been fooled.”
So, York had seen through her lie from the very beginning.
“Then why did you still ask me to meet you on the rooftop?”
Since the cards were on the table, Tu Nan saw no need to keep up the act. She looked at York expressionlessly, her voice devoid of warmth.
“That doesn’t matter to me at all,” York chuckled. “Miss, whatever your name is-though I don’t know why you’re so desperate to know how Yi Weichun died, you’re about to get exactly what you wanted.”
“What?” She frowned.
A strange noise suddenly came from the rooftop entrance.
Tu Nan instinctively turned her head. He Ling’s pale face came into view.
Her face was as white as paper, and her nurse’s uniform whipped loudly in the wind. Her unfocused eyes searched around blankly.
“Weichun… where are you…” she murmured to herself.
Beside her, York suddenly moved.
“He Ling, I’m here!” York shouted. At the same time, he grabbed Tu Nan’s hand and forced it against his own throat. “Save me! Help me!”
Tu Nan was stunned by his actions.
Her eyes widened as she tried to pull her hand back, but York was far stronger than her; she couldn’t budge.
“Are you insane?” The situation was so absurd she almost wanted to laugh. “Such a clumsy trick… Yi Weichun is long dead. Besides, in what way do you even look like Yi Weichun?”
York wore a Weird, triumphant smile.
“There are more bizarre things in this world than you can imagine. Do you know who gave me that pill?”
A sense of foreboding rose from the depths of her heart.
“Who?”
“Why don’t you guess? Who in this hospital has the ability to manufacture such a miraculous pill?”
“Weichun?” The moment He Ling saw York, a brilliant light erupted in her eyes. But in the next second, she saw Tu Nan’s hand “choking” York’s neck.
York had a smug smile on his face, yet his voice was filled with terror. “Save me… I feel like I can’t breathe…”
“I’ll save you… I’m coming to save you…” He Ling nodded repeatedly, looking like someone possessed as she charged toward them.
This was bad.
Behind them was the rooftop railing. After years of exposure to the elements, it looked rickety and unstable, offering no sense of security at all.
Tu Nan struggled violently.
But her strength was no match for York’s.
“Why struggle?” York smiled, enjoying her desperation. “Didn’t you want to know how Yi Weichun died? You’re about to taste the exact same despair she did.”
He Ling charged forward like a young calf, recklessly rushing in front of her and reaching out to squeeze her throat with all her might.
“No one… no one is allowed to bully Weichun!”
“Cough, cough…” Tu Nan reached out to pry He Ling’s hands away. “Wake up… look closely… at who I am!”
“I will eliminate anyone who hurts Weichun…” A strange red light flickered in He Ling’s eyes, and the strength in her hands was unnaturally powerful.
“I’m going to… kill you!”
She shoved Tu Nan toward the guardrail.
This was He Ling’s dreamscape; in a sense, she was practically invincible here.
If she wanted her dead, she would surely die!
Tu Nan felt the air in her lungs steadily depleting. She was on the verge of suffocating.
The sensation of asphyxiation flooded her body, making it difficult for even her brain to function.
York stood to the side, watching them with great interest.
So this was how Yi Weichun died?
To be pushed off a high-rise by one’s own cherished companion in such a manner-how ridiculous, how ironic.
And how much agony would He Ling be in once she regained her senses afterward?
To kill the person most important to her with her own hands… looking back on it, the despair must be absolute.
York didn’t just want to kill; he wanted to destroy the soul.
The guardrail behind her let out a fragile creak before suddenly snapping. More than half of Tu Nan’s body dangled over the edge.
A loud ringing echoed in her ears as the color drained from her face.
“This kind of drama truly never gets old,” York remarked airily from the side.
With bloodshot eyes, Tu Nan glared at him.
“Oh, don’t look at me like that,” he laughed easily. “I’ll have nightmares. I’m not the one killing you. Even if you want to seek vengeance, you should find the right person.”
Just wait… until I find a way to kill you…
Tu Nan was suddenly overcome with an infinite hatred for him. It was the first time she had ever felt such an intense murderous intent toward another person.
She had to kill York.
York suddenly clicked his tongue.
“What a loathsome gaze,” he said with disgust. “From the first moment I saw you, I saw something in your eyes that I hate. You’re different from those other people; your eyes are filled with nothing but loathing for me.”
“You actually dare to loathe me.” York lost a bit of his composure. “I have saved so many pitiful women. All women should worship me, thank me, and obey me unconditionally!”
If the situation allowed for it, Tu Nan would have spat right in his face.
“You refuse to accept your fate,” York began to laugh again. “But this is your fate.”
“Someone like you doesn’t even deserve my salvation.”
“My life…” Tu Nan squeezed the words out from her throat with every ounce of strength she had. Her voice was hoarse and grating. “Is held… only in my own hands.”
The smile on York’s face froze.
“He Ling, push her down quickly. Hurry, I’m so scared,” he said, immediately shifting his tone as he addressed the incoherent He Ling.
He Ling seemed to hesitate for a moment.
“What are you waiting for?” York snapped. “Do you want Yi Weichun to get hurt?”
“No… No!” He Ling shrieked. “No one hurts Weichun in front of me!”
She released her grip on Tu Nan’s neck and shoved her violently off the building.
Before Tu Nan could even catch her breath, her body tumbled backward, completely out of control.
“Goodbye then.” York stepped forward, looking down at her from his high vantage point. “What a pity, I still don’t know your name.”
“My name is Tu Nan!”
Falling through the air, Tu Nan stared at him without blinking, somehow managing to shout back.
The wind howled in her ears, and the sensation of weightlessness was overwhelming.
“I will… I will definitely kill you.”
York frowned slightly. Those words gave him a sudden, ominous feeling, but he quickly broke into a mocking laugh.
A person certain to die was actually making such a boastful claim.
There was a loud thud.
